New England's largest independent comic chain — since 1983. Comics, graphic novels, Magic, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, toys, and the home of The Tick. Multiple locations across Massachusetts under new ownership.
New England Comics is a Massachusetts institution. Founded in 1983 as a small 500-square-foot shop in Quincy Center by George Suarez and Henry Scagnoli, NEC grew into the largest and best-known comic store chain in New England, operating up to 11 locations at its peak — including two in Tampa, Florida. The Quincy flagship on Hancock Street remains the spiritual home of the operation.
In October 2025, founder George Suarez retired and sold the business to longtime managers Tom Yee and Ralph Blaser, who had been running day-to-day operations for decades. Under their stewardship, NEC continues to offer the deep comic selection and community-focused service that built the chain's reputation, while maintaining current locations in Quincy, Norwood, Brockton, Malden, Allston, and other Massachusetts communities.
Beyond comics and graphic novels, NEC carries collectible card games — Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, and Yu-Gi-Oh — with regular tournaments at select locations. The chain also sells toys, action figures, and collectibles. NEC is notable as the publisher of The Tick, the beloved comic character that spawned cartoon and live-action TV series.
The Quincy location benefits from its proximity to the Red Line T and the Hancock Street commercial district, where it sits just doors down from Alpha Omega Hobby — making this stretch of Quincy Center a one-stop destination for card and game enthusiasts. Free Comic Book Day events at NEC locations are legendary, featuring creator appearances and massive giveaways.
