How to Submit Cards to PSA: Step-by-Step Walkthrough

From membership setup to packaging to shipping, this is the exact step-by-step process for submitting cards to PSA. Written for first-timers but useful for experienced submitters refining their workflow.

Submitting cards to PSA for the first time is surprisingly straightforward once you know the process. This step-by-step guide walks through exactly how to submit — from membership setup to card preparation to shipping and tracking. It's written for first-time submitters but includes details experienced graders will find useful for tier selection and packaging best practices.

Step 1: Create a PSA Membership

PSA requires a paid membership to submit. Go to psacard.com and create an account, then select a membership tier. In 2026 memberships start at around $69-$99/year for basic tiers.

Higher membership tiers offer perks like free value-tier submissions, grading discounts, and expedited services. For one-time submitters, the basic tier is sufficient. For active submitters (4+ submissions per year), a higher tier often pays for itself in bundled grading credits.

Step 2: Choose Your Cards to Submit

Be selective. Not every card benefits from grading. Reference our grading ROI guide for decision criteria. For first submissions, focus on:

  • Cards with strong PSA 10 potential in pristine condition.
  • Cards with sufficient raw value that grading fees make sense.
  • Cards you intend to sell or insure, not just hold.

Step 3: Determine the Right Service Tier

PSA uses declared value to determine service tier:

  • Value: declared $0-$499.
  • Regular: $500-$1,499.
  • Express: $1,500-$2,499.
  • Super Express: $2,500-$9,999.
  • Walk-Through: typically $10,000+ or on-site at shows.

Declared value should reflect what you reasonably expect the card to sell for in its anticipated graded condition. Underdeclaring can cause issues if the card grades higher; overdeclaring wastes money.

Step 4: Log into PSA and Create a Submission Form Online

In your member dashboard:

  1. Click "Submit Cards."
  2. Select your service tier.
  3. Enter card details — sport, year, set, card number, player/subject, variant, declared value.
  4. Select card options (e.g., mini-holder for very small cards, larger holder for oversize cards).
  5. Continue through all cards in your submission.
  6. Review total, pay for service at checkout.
  7. Print the submission form PDF.

Keep your submission number — you'll need it for tracking and any correspondence with PSA.

Step 5: Prepare Your Cards

This is where most first-time submitters lose grade points. Proper prep is essential.

Handle Cards by the Edges

Oils and fingerprints from touching card surfaces can cause surface grade reductions. Hold cards only by the edges or through a penny sleeve.

Sleeve Each Card

Place each card in a fresh Ultra Pro, BCW, or Dragon Shield penny sleeve. The opening of the sleeve should face UP when the card is inserted into the Card Saver.

Place in Card Saver I

Card Saver I (CSI) semi-rigid holders are the industry standard for PSA submission. Slide the sleeved card into the CSI, opening of sleeve at top. The CSI protects cards during transit without squeezing or warping them.

Buy CSI directly from Blowout Cards, Dave & Adam's, or card shops. Generic "semi-rigid holders" are NOT acceptable — PSA specifically references Card Saver I.

Do NOT Use Top Loaders

Top loaders are for shipping and storage. PSA's official instructions request Card Saver I (or similar semi-rigid) for submissions. Rigid top loaders can damage cards during PSA's intake process.

Organize Cards in Submission Order

Arrange cards in the same order they appear on your submission form. This speeds up PSA's receiving process.

Step 6: Package for Shipping

Pack cards so they arrive in the exact condition they left you.

Order of Packing

  1. Each card in Card Saver I (from Step 5).
  2. Stack CSIs together in groups of 10-20. Use rubber bands to hold each stack.
  3. Wrap each stack in a team bag or seal with tape to prevent shifting.
  4. Cushion stacks inside a sturdy cardboard box. Use bubble wrap, packing peanuts, or crumpled paper to prevent card shifting during transit.
  5. Include your printed submission form inside the box.
  6. Seal the box with strong packing tape, edges and seams reinforced.

Labeling

Write "FRAGILE — COLLECTOR CARDS" on the outside if it makes you feel better; realistically, treat the package as if shipping companies ignore labels.

Step 7: Ship to PSA

PSA publishes their current shipping address on the submission form (it's been the same California address for years but verify for your submission). Use USPS Priority Mail with tracking and insurance, or UPS/FedEx for larger or higher-value submissions.

Shipping Cost Guidelines

  • Value tier submissions ($5,000-$10,000 total declared value): $20-$40 shipping with insurance.
  • Regular/Express submissions: $30-$75 with appropriate insurance.
  • High-value submissions ($50,000+ total declared value): $75-$200+ with full insurance.

Insurance

USPS insurance frequently denies claims on trading cards. For higher-value shipments, use:

  • Shipsurance or third-party shipping insurance.
  • Registered Mail (USPS) for ultra-valuable submissions — slower but better insured.
  • UPS or FedEx with declared value and their own shipping insurance.

Step 8: Track Your Submission

Once your package arrives at PSA:

  1. Log in to psacard.com.
  2. Enter your submission number.
  3. Watch the stage progression: Received → Research & ID → Grading → Assembly → QA → Shipped.

Don't obsessively check. Status updates happen over days or weeks.

Step 9: Receive Your Cards

PSA ships your completed submission back via the shipping method you selected. Typical return shipping options:

  • USPS Priority with signature (standard).
  • UPS Ground or Priority for larger submissions.
  • Insured shipping for high-value returns.

Inspect cards immediately upon receipt. Verify:

  • Every card you submitted is returned.
  • Every slab is intact and undamaged.
  • Grades match what you see in your online account.
  • Cert numbers match your submission records.

Step 10: File the Cards or Resell

For display or long-term hold: store slabs in slab sleeves inside fireproof storage. For resale: list immediately while the grade is fresh and any associated hype is current.

Common Submission Mistakes

  • Submitting damaged cards hoping for miracles. PSA graders catch everything.
  • Wrong Card Saver orientation. Card and sleeve openings should face the top of the Card Saver.
  • Overpacking or underpacking. Cards should not shift in the box, but shouldn't be crushed together either.
  • Under-insuring the outbound shipment. If the package is lost, insurance should cover at least raw card value.
  • Incomplete submission forms. Missing card details can delay your entire submission while PSA researches each card.
  • Submitting too many cards for your budget. A 100-card submission at Regular tier is $4,000-$7,500 in fees. Know your numbers.

Alternative: Submit Through a Local Shop

Many card shops are authorized PSA dealers and can submit on your behalf. Benefits:

  • Bulk pricing passed through to you.
  • Expert card prep and packaging.
  • No shipping logistics for you.
  • Owners can advise on tier selection and grade expectations.

Downsides:

  • Shop typically charges a per-card or percentage fee for the service.
  • Slightly longer total timeline (shop consolidates submissions before shipping).

Find a shop near you that offers PSA submission.

First Submission: Test Small

For your first PSA submission, consider a 5-10 card Value-tier test run rather than a massive 50+ card submission. This lets you:

  • Learn the process without risking large capital.
  • Calibrate your grade expectations against actual results.
  • Validate your packing and shipping approach.
  • Test turnaround timing for your planning.

After one successful submission, you'll be ready for larger flights.

PSA submission isn't complicated once you understand the steps. The process rewards preparation, attention to detail, and realistic expectations. Get those right, and every submission becomes a straightforward business transaction rather than a stressful experiment.

Let a local shop handle submissions.

Authorized dealer shops manage the entire submission process — prep, packaging, shipping — often with bulk pricing that makes it cheaper than DIY.
