Back to School Superdrop Arrives April 27
Wizards of the Coast is keeping the momentum going after the Secrets of Strixhaven launch with a packed schedule of events and products through the end of April. The headline announcement is the Secret Lair: Back to School Superdrop, launching on April 27, 2026, which ties thematically into the Strixhaven university setting.
Secret Lair drops have become one of the most popular ways for collectors to acquire exclusive alternate-art versions of popular cards, and the Back to School theme promises unique artistic interpretations of fan-favorite spells and creatures from across Magic history.
CEDH Makes Its Official Debut on Magic Online
In a move that competitive Commander players have been requesting for years, Magic Online is introducing a dedicated CEDH Queue starting April 29. The format features single-game, four-player Commander matches with prizes awarded to the winner only.
This is significant because it represents official recognition of competitive Commander (CEDH) as a distinct format from casual Commander play. Until now, CEDH players have relied on third-party platforms and community-organized events to find competitive matches. An official queue on Magic Online brings legitimacy, consistent rules enforcement, and prize support to the format.
Secrets of Strixhaven Early Results
Secrets of Strixhaven launched on MTG Arena on April 21, with paper release following on April 24. Early Limited events are already running, including Premier Draft, Traditional Draft, Pick-Two Draft, and both Best-of-Three Sealed and Factionalized Sealed events. The set features the return of the Mystical Archive — premium reprints of iconic instants and sorceries with special borderless art treatments.
The Buy-a-Box promotion is also making a return to MTG Arena, with the 45-pack offering including one rare card from the set and the 90-pack offering including two rare cards.
Competitive Events on the Horizon
For competitive players, the NRG Series MTGO Showdown begins on Sunday, April 26 at 10 a.m. PT, featuring Secrets of Strixhaven Sealed Deck with a Top 8 Draft. A total of \$5,000 in cash prizes will be distributed to the Top 32 finishers.
