The Naruto Card Game Explained: Full Rules, the Gen Con Promo, and a Road to Summer 2027

Bandai debuted the Naruto Card Game at Gen Con 2026 and confirmed a global Summer 2027 launch. Here is how the Leader and Chakra system actually works, the full event roadmap through launch, and an honest read on the CP-001 convention promo.

Bandai has now shown its hand. The Naruto Card Game, which made its public debut at Gen Con 2026 in Indianapolis over the past four days, has a confirmed global launch window of Summer 2027, a full rules framework, and a mapped-out event roadmap running for the next twelve months.

For collectors, a brand-new TCG from a major publisher with a year-long runway before launch is an unusual situation. You have time to learn it, time to decide whether you care, and time to position around the promos that will be printed in the meantime. Here is what has actually been confirmed.

How the Game Works

The core structure is a Leader-based system, which will feel immediately familiar to anyone who has played Bandai's One Piece Card Game.

Each player builds around a Leader Card, which determines the deck's color and overall strategy. Around that Leader you build:

  • 51 cards in the main deck
  • 5 Chakra cards
  • 1 Summon card

The win condition is straightforward: reduce the opposing Leader's Life to zero.

The Five Card Types

Leader Cards anchor the deck and set its color identity. Character Cards are your primary attackers and can use Jutsu by spending Chakra. EX Character Cards are more powerful versions that become playable under specific conditions. Chakra and Summon cards round out the system as the resource and special-play components.

The Chakra mechanic is the piece worth paying attention to, because it is the game's resource system and the thing that will determine whether the format feels fast or grindy. Bandai has not released full deckbuilding restrictions yet, which is the biggest remaining unknown for anyone trying to evaluate the game seriously.

What Is on the Cards

The game spans the entire franchise, drawing from Naruto, Naruto: Shippuden, and Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. Confirmed early cards include Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Sakura Haruno, Jiraiya, Itachi Uchiha, Orochimaru, and Tsunade.

Pulling from all three series at launch is a meaningful decision. It means the first wave is not limited to the original run, and it gives Bandai a much larger character pool to build sets around over the following years.

The Roadmap Through Launch

Bandai laid out a demo-and-preview tour that runs from now until launch:

  • Gen Con 2026 - the world debut, which wraps up today
  • New York Comic Con
  • PAX Australia
  • Spiel Essen
  • Paris Games Week
  • Lucca Comics and Games
  • Bandai Card Games Fest
  • December 2026 - additional product information expected
  • January 2027 - in-store tutorial sessions begin at local game stores
  • Summer 2027 - global launch

Bandai has also confirmed a full competitive structure after launch, running from local store events up through larger tournaments and culminating in a World Championship.

The Promo Situation

This is where collectors should focus. Gen Con attendees who completed a free tutorial session received a gift set containing a CP-001 Chakra Card in a Gen Con 2026 version, a branded backpack, a sticker, and a voucher for an official playmat shipping in 2027.

The CP-001 Gen Con promo now has a specific and unusual profile. It is a convention-exclusive card for a game that will not be publicly available for approximately ten months. There is no player base yet, which means most copies are sitting with people who attended a general gaming convention rather than with dedicated collectors of this specific game.

That combination has a predictable arc based on how comparable Bandai convention promos have behaved:

  • Now through August - cheapest window. Attendees list extras, and there is no established demand base to absorb them.
  • Late 2026 - modest appreciation as December product news raises awareness.
  • Mid-2027 onward - the real move, once launch creates an actual player base that discovers a promo they had no opportunity to get.

The risk is obvious and worth stating plainly: if the game does not find an audience, none of that happens and the promo stays a curiosity. New TCGs fail regularly, including ones backed by enormous IP. Bandai's track record with One Piece is the case for optimism, but it is not a guarantee.

Should You Care Yet

If you are a player, the honest answer is that January 2027 is when this becomes actionable. In-store tutorial sessions will be your first real opportunity to learn the game with a local group, and that is when local stores start building the community that determines whether the game sticks in your area.

If you are a collector, the actionable window is right now, and it is narrow. Convention promos from a pre-launch game are at their most available in the two weeks after the convention. Whether that is a good bet depends entirely on your read of whether a Naruto TCG will find an audience in 2027, and that is a judgment call rather than a calculation.

If you run a shop, the date to circle is January 2027. Bandai is putting tutorial sessions into local game stores six months before launch, which is a longer on-ramp than most publishers offer. Stores that get in on that program early will be the ones with a player base on day one.
