The Hobby's Quiet Takeover of Comic-Con
San Diego Comic-Con 2026 is in full swing through Sunday, July 26, and if you have been paying attention to the show floor, one thing is clear: trading cards have gone from a sideshow to a headline act. Topps, Upper Deck, and Chinese card giant KAYOU all brought serious exclusives to San Diego this year, and several of them are already trading hands at multiples of booth price.
Topps: Marvel Mint Returns and GPK Glows
Topps is set up at Booth #2934, and the big reveal is a first look at 2026 Topps Marvel Mint, the follow-up to the 2025 Marvel Mint set that debuted at last year's show. Marvel chromium at a convention with this much Marvel foot traffic is about as safe a bet as product placement gets.
The sleeper item is sillier: Garbage Pail Kids glow-in-the-dark enamel pins featuring Dead Ted and Jay Decay, each paired with an exclusive SDCC promo trading card. GPK convention promos have a long history of aging well — small print runs, dedicated collector base, and a crossover audience that buys on impulse.
One important logistics note: Topps convention exclusives require a reservation through Comic-Con's Online Exclusives Portal. No reservation, no purchase — do not fly to San Diego expecting to walk up.
Upper Deck: DC Absolute Universe Debuts
Upper Deck is at Booth #307 with a brand-new set inspired by DC's Absolute Universe — the darker, rebooted DC line that has been the hottest thing in comics for two years. The booth has the full card display up for fans to check out, plus show-exclusive versions available on site.
This is a meaningful move for Upper Deck. With its sports licenses narrowed, UD has been leaning hard into entertainment — the Michael Jordan legacy deal announced earlier this month plus a new DC line signals where the company thinks its growth is.
KAYOU Plants a Flag
KAYOU — the company behind the Chinese card-collecting boom — brought an offsite activation, meetups, and a booth presence to San Diego this year. Western collectors have mostly encountered KAYOU through imported Naruto and Demon Slayer product; a full SDCC push suggests a serious US expansion is coming.
What It Means for Your LGS
Convention exclusives inevitably flow to the secondary market within days. If you are hunting SDCC promos without a badge:
- Watch eBay listings starting Monday — supply peaks in the first week and prices usually dip before stabilizing.
- Comic and card shops near Southern California often end up with walk-in convention stock. Worth a call before paying eBay premiums.
- The Marvel Mint first look means a wide release is coming — the SDCC versions will be the short prints, not the only prints.
Comic-Con stopped being just about comics a long time ago. In 2026, it is one of the hobby's most important product showcases — and it is happening the week before The National. The card industry does not take a day off anymore.
