Magic Spotlight: The Hobbit Starts Today in Dallas With $50,000 and a Promo You Cannot Buy

Magic Spotlight: The Hobbit runs September 4 to 6 at SCG CON Dallas: Modern format, a $50,000 prize pool, Pro Tour invites for the Top 8, and a Riddles in the Dark promo for every competitor. Here is the schedule, the promo, and how the weekend will move Hobbit singles.

Three weeks after Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit hit paper, its biggest competitive weekend in North America starts today. Magic Spotlight: The Hobbit runs September 4 through 6 at SCG CON Dallas, with a $50,000 prize pool, Pro Tour invitations for the Top 8, and a promo that every main-event player takes home. The format is Modern, which means both Middle-earth sets, The Hobbit and 2023's Tales of Middle-earth, are legal side by side for the first time on a Spotlight stage.

Whether you are playing, watching or just wondering what the weekend does to Hobbit singles, here is the guide.

Event Details

  • Dates: Friday, September 4 through Sunday, September 6, 2026. The main event begins Saturday at 9 a.m. Central.
  • Host: Star City Games, as part of SCG CON Dallas. Registration runs through Melee.
  • Format: Modern Constructed, open to all players.
  • Prizes: $50,000 pool, Pro Tour invites for the Top 8, and a Black Lotus-themed trophy with The Hobbit set symbol for the winner.
  • Coverage: Live on the Star City Games Twitch channel and SCG Coverage on YouTube, with analysis to follow on Magic.gg.

This is the second and final Hobbit Spotlight. Brisbane, Australia hosted the first on August 28 to 30. After Dallas, the next Modern-format Spotlight will feature a different set.

The Promo: Riddles in the Dark

Every main-event competitor receives a non-foil Riddles in the Dark promo with new art by Tomas Duchek, depicting the Bilbo-and-Gollum scene from the novel. The Top 128 also receive a traditional foil copy. Spotlight promos have held value well because they cannot be bought; the foil version, capped at 128 per event across two events, is the one to watch. Expect the non-foil to settle in the $15 to $25 range and the foil to trade at several multiples of that once Dallas results post.

Why Modern Matters for Hobbit Prices

The Hobbit was designed for Standard, but Spotlight Dallas is Modern, and Modern is where Tales of Middle-earth cards like The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters proved that a Universes Beyond set can reshape a competitive format. Every Hobbit card that shows up in a Dallas Top 8 decklist gets a Modern price tag on top of its Standard one. The three things to track over the weekend:

  • Which Hobbit cards make Day 2. A rare that appears as a four-of in multiple top decks can double in a weekend. Magic.gg's decklist page will have Day 2 lists posted Saturday night.
  • Whether Tales of Middle-earth staples spike. Renewed attention to the 2023 set tends to lift its Modern staples, especially the Ring and Bowmasters, regardless of Hobbit results.
  • Which cards do not show up. Preorder-hyped mythics that go unplayed in a 50,000-dollar Modern event tend to drift back to their Standard value.

The best time to buy a Hobbit competitive card is usually the week after the Spotlight, when the hype from a Top 8 finish meets the reality of a restocked shelf.

Gift Bundle Also Lands Today

The Hobbit Gift Bundle releases September 4, and it is the last new sealed product for the set before the fall shifts to Reality Fracture on September 25. Gift Bundles include Play Boosters, a Collector Booster and the oversized spindown, and they historically sell through in the first two weeks at big-box retail and stay available longer at local game stores.

If You Are Not in Dallas

Magic Presents: Heart of the Mountain, the in-store event series, runs September 4 through 10 at participating game stores. It is the local-level companion to the Spotlight, with its own promo, and the easiest way to play The Hobbit competitively this weekend without a plane ticket. The Arena Direct event featuring Hobbit Sealed also continues through September 6, with a new event opening today at 9 a.m. Pacific.

Ask your local game store whether it is running Heart of the Mountain, and check our event calendar for Magic events this weekend. If you are in Texas, find a card shop near Dallas to trade before and after the main event.
