Wednesday's Secret Lair x MSCHF: The Zeta Set drop was supposed to be the first time Secret Lair sold a randomized booster, a new experiment for a storefront that has spent five years selling fixed lists. Instead, about 40 minutes after the Chaos Vault opened, Wizards of the Coast paused the sale to "manage technical issues" and told everyone in the queue to keep their browser open to hold their place.
If you were in that queue, or you gave up on it, here is what went wrong, what Wizards has said so far, and what to do if your order is in limbo.
What Happened
The sale opened at noon Eastern on September 2. At roughly 9:42 a.m. Pacific, the official Secret Lair account posted that the queue had been paused, that positions would be preserved, and that customers should stay in line. As of about 10:20 a.m. Pacific, the company was still describing the problem as a "temporary issue" and had not reopened.
Customer reports on social media described a familiar list of symptoms: incomplete checkouts, payment screens timing out, checkout windows expiring at random, and completed orders that never generated a confirmation email. Several customers also pointed to what they called "bypass links" left open on the site that let people check out without going through the queue at all, which, if accurate, is the more serious problem for anyone who waited in line honestly.
Wizards' guidance for anyone who placed an order and thinks something went wrong is to contact customer support directly.
Why This Stings More Than Usual
Two reasons. First, the Zeta Set is a randomized product with a 12-booster per-customer cap, so the whole design assumes fair access. A queue that some people can skip undermines the premise. Second, the pause landed days after Secret Lair's director publicly walked through what went right with the Hatsune Miku Commander Deck sale. That sale was held up as proof the infrastructure had matured. One week later, the Chaos Vault lived up to its name.
Secret Lair has a history here. The 2024 countdown drops melted down badly enough that Wizards restructured how it sells the product, and the Chaos Vault was part of the fix. This is not the first time a fix has needed a fix.

If Your Order Is Stuck
You got charged but no confirmation email
Check your bank or card statement for a pending authorization, then contact Wizards support with the timestamp and amount. Do not reorder until they confirm whether the first one exists; the 12-booster cap means a duplicate could be canceled, and refunds on canceled duplicates have been slow in past drops.
Your checkout timed out and the item vanished from your cart
You most likely do not have an order. If the sale reopens, you will need to go back through the queue. Screenshots of the timeout help if you end up disputing anything later.
You have a confirmation email
You are probably fine. Secret Lair orders in past drops shipped even when the sale itself was chaotic. Save the email and watch for the shipping notice.
What This Means for the Secondary Market
Randomized Secret Lair boosters were always going to hit the secondary market fast, because the per-customer cap forces set builders to trade. A messy launch makes that worse in two ways: fewer boosters land in collector hands on day one, and the ones that do carry a "got through the queue" premium for a week or two. If you want specific Zeta Set treatments, waiting for singles is almost certainly cheaper than buying sealed boosters at a markup this weekend.
Local game stores do not receive Secret Lair product directly, so this is not a drop you can save by walking into a shop. What your shop can do is run a trade night once boosters arrive. Ask.
What To Watch
Whether Wizards reopens the sale with the same queue or restarts it, whether it addresses the bypass-link reports publicly, and whether the Zeta Set experiment gets repeated at all. A randomized Secret Lair booster could be a real format. It needs a storefront that can survive its own launch day first.
