PSA vs BGS vs CGC: Which Grader Should You Use?

A head-to-head comparison of PSA, BGS, and CGC — cost, turnaround, subgrades, resale premium, and which grader wins for each category.

PSA dominates market share and resale premium. BGS has loyal fans for subgrades and high-end modern. CGC has taken over large chunks of the Pokemon market. Picking the right grader depends on what you're submitting, how fast you need it back, and where you plan to sell.

The Three Majors at a Glance

PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) is the oldest and largest. Grading scale 1–10, full-point increments, no subgrades. Their slabs are the market standard — PSA commands higher resale prices than any other holder across most categories.

BGS (Beckett Grading Services) offers subgrades — four separate scores (centering, corners, edges, surface) that average into the final grade. A BGS 9.5 "Black Label" (all four subs are 10) is one of the most prestigious designations in the hobby. Strong in modern basketball, football, and high-end Pokemon.

CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) expanded from comics to cards around 2020 and has become the dominant grader for Pokemon. Half-point grades, fast turnaround, and competitive pricing. Sports market share is growing but still trails PSA.

By Category

Vintage sports: PSA or SGC. SGC's tuxedo holder is a favorite for pre-war.

Modern sports: PSA for resale premium. BGS competitive on high-end with subgrades.

Pokemon (modern): CGC for speed and cost. PSA 10 still commands the highest prices on key cards.

Pokemon (vintage/WOTC): PSA rules here. A PSA 10 Base Set Charizard sells for multiples of CGC 10.

Magic: The Gathering: BGS and CGC dominate. MTG collectors are subgrade-focused.

Cost and Turnaround

PSA has the widest price range — ~$25 economy (long turnaround) up to hundreds for express. Backlogs on cheap tiers can stretch into months.

BGS sits in the middle on price. Premium tiers are slower than PSA's equivalent.

CGC is generally cheapest for bulk modern TCG and has the fastest turnaround.

The Resale Question

PSA carries a 20–50% premium over BGS or CGC on the same card in the same grade. The gap is narrower on modern Pokemon and BGS Black Labels. If you're grading to sell, PSA is almost always the financially optimal choice.

The Subgrade Debate

BGS subgrades give precise condition information. They matter hugely on top-end cards where the Black Label premium can be 10x. They matter less on middle-market cards. PSA and CGC don't offer subgrades.

What About SGC?

SGC is the fourth major grader, especially strong for vintage sports. Their black tuxedo holders are respected, particularly on pre-war. SGC is owned by PSA's parent company but operates independently. For vintage baseball, SGC is a legitimate PSA alternative at often better prices.

Decision Framework

What are you grading? Vintage sports → PSA/SGC. Modern Pokemon → CGC/PSA. Modern sports → PSA. MTG → BGS/CGC.

Is resale a priority? Yes → PSA. No → cheapest reliable option for your category.

How fast? Urgent → CGC or PSA express. Normal → any economy tier, CGC typically fastest.
