How to Find Friday Night Magic (FNM) Near You
How to find Friday Night Magic events, what to expect at your first one, which format to play, and how to become a regular.
Friday Night Magic is the heartbeat of the local Magic: The Gathering scene. Every Friday, card shops around the world host casual-to-competitive events where players show up, play a few rounds, and hang out with people who love the game. FNM is where new players become regulars, where skills get sharpened, and where lifelong friendships start. Here's how to find one and what to expect.
What is FNM?
Friday Night Magic is a sanctioned event program run by Wizards of the Coast through local game stores (LGS). Stores register as WPN (Wizards Play Network) members to host FNM events. The format varies by store — some run Standard, some Modern, some Commander, and some rotate. Entry fees are typically $5–$15, with prizes distributed as booster packs or store credit.
How to Find FNM
The official Wizards of the Coast store locator (locator.wizards.com) lists every WPN-registered store and their event schedules. This is the most comprehensive source. But many stores also post their FNM schedule on Facebook, Instagram, and Google Business listings.
Our card shop directory lists shops that run MTG events. Search by your area and look for shops that mention Magic, FNM, or events in their descriptions.
Ask at any card shop or game store: "Do you run Friday Night Magic?" Even if they don't, they'll know who in the area does.
What to Expect at Your First FNM
Arrive 15–30 minutes early to register and get settled. Bring your deck, dice, a pen and paper (or a life counter app), and cash for the entry fee. The store will pair you against other players using a Swiss-round system — you play multiple rounds and get paired against people with similar records.
FNM is the most casual sanctioned event. People are there to have fun. New players are welcomed, and most regulars are happy to help if you have rules questions. Don't stress about winning — your first FNM is about experiencing the event, not topping the standings.
Which Format Should You Play?
If the store offers multiple formats, pick the one that matches your budget and collection. Commander is the most popular casual format and many stores host Commander pods on Friday nights. Standard and Pioneer are common for constructed events. Draft is great if you don't have a deck — you build one from packs at the event. Ask the store what format this week's FNM runs before you go.
Building a Routine
FNM is best as a weekly habit. Regular attendance is how you become part of the community, improve your skills, and build trading relationships. The first few weeks might feel unfamiliar, but by week four or five, you'll know the regulars, have a preferred seat, and look forward to Fridays.
