Card Show Weekend August 29-31: Las Vegas, Denver, Atlantic City and the Floors Nobody Is Watching
While the hobby stares at San Francisco, some of the deepest floors of the month are running in Las Vegas, Denver, Santa Clara and Atlantic City. A split-attention weekend is usually a buyer's weekend.
San Francisco has the gravity this weekend, for obvious reasons. But the last card show weekend of August is unusually deep everywhere else, and several of the biggest floors in the country are running while the hobby's attention is pointed at Chase Center. That is often the best time to buy.
Multi-Day Shows
Las Vegas Card Show - August 29 to 30
At the Ahern Luxury Boutique Hotel. Public hours run 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM with VIP entry at 10:00 AM, and there is a trade night from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The trade night format is the reason to go if you are a trader rather than a buyer - the floor after 5:00 is a different event than the floor before it, with far less retail browsing and far more table-to-table dealing.
Denver Card Shows - August 28 to 30
Three-day format: Friday 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Saturday 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Sunday 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Friday evenings at multi-day shows are consistently the least crowded and the most negotiable, because dealers have just finished setting up and have not sold anything yet.
East Bay Card Show - August 29 to 30, Santa Clara
At the Santa Clara Convention Center. This one is close enough to Worlds traffic to catch spillover, which cuts both ways: more buyers in the room, but also more out-of-town dealers who brought inventory specifically for a Pokemon-heavy crowd. If you are hunting sports, the sports tables at a Pokemon-weighted show tend to be quieter than usual.
Saturday, August 29 Only
- Shore Sports and TCG Expo - Atlantic City, NJ, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The longest single-day window on this list.
- New York Evolving TCG Card Show - Flushing, NY, 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM. TCG-focused rather than sports-focused.
- Card Con - Dartmouth, MA, 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. New England's late-summer floor, running well into the evening.
- San Francisco Card Show - 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, walking distance from the Worlds crowd.
- NTX Toy Show - NTX Arena, Lewisville, TX. One day only, and broader than cards - worth it if you cross-collect.
Buying Strategy for a Split-Attention Weekend
When a single event pulls national attention to one city, the rest of the country's floors run softer than a normal August Saturday. Two things follow from that.
Sealed wax is the soft category
Shows compete with each other for the same dealer inventory. A dealer who chose Denver over San Francisco brought boxes he expected to move in front of a bigger crowd. On a slower floor, that inventory gets more negotiable as the day goes on - especially in the last ninety minutes, when packing up unsold wax is the alternative.
Pokemon singles are the hard category
This is the one weekend all year when every dealer in the country knows exactly what Pokemon is worth, because the entire hobby is watching the same broadcast. Do not expect to find a sleeper Pokemon price this weekend. Sports, Magic, and the smaller TCGs are where the inattention lives.
A note on cash: several of these shows are hotel or convention-center venues with limited on-site ATMs and high fees. Bring more cash than you plan to spend. Cash still moves prices at the table in a way that card payments do not.
Check Before You Drive
End-of-August shows are the most likely on the calendar to shift hours or venues, because they collide with the holiday-weekend setup that follows. Confirm hours on the promoter's own page the morning of, not the week before.
