Card Show Weekend Preview August 15-16: Fort Lauderdale, Santa Clara, and the Best Buying Window of the Month

The regional circuit is back at full strength with convention-center shows on both coasts and a deep bench of regional events. Dealers are carrying both fresh National pickups and National leftovers, and football rookies have not been repriced by the season yet. Here is the weekend guide.

The post-National calendar is filling back in. After a week where everything in the hobby pointed at Rosemont, the regional show circuit returns to full strength β€” and the weekend of August 15-16 is the busiest of the month, with two large convention-center shows on opposite coasts and a deep bench of regional events in between.

The Two Big Ones

The Hobby Card Show β€” Fort Lauderdale, FL

August 15-16 | Broward County Convention Center, Grand Ballroom
1950 Eisenhower Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316
Saturday and Sunday, 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM (VIP preview hour 10:00-11:00 AM)

The Hobby Card Show has built a reputation for convention-center scale with a community feel, and the Fort Lauderdale stop is its flagship Florida date. The VIP preview hour is the meaningful upgrade here β€” an hour of unobstructed table access before general admission is worth it if you are hunting specific singles rather than browsing.

LA Card Expo β€” Santa Clara, CA

August 15-16 | Santa Clara Convention Center
5001 Great America Pkwy, Santa Clara, CA 95054

Despite the name, this LA Card Expo date runs in Santa Clara, putting a major show in the Bay Area market on the same weekend. Northern California has historically been underserved relative to its collector population, and convention-center-scale shows there tend to draw well.

Regional Shows the Same Weekend

The rest of the country is well covered. Notable events include:

  • The Flip Trade Show β€” Chattanooga, TN
  • The Inaugural Sports Card & TCG Show β€” Palmyra, VA
  • The North Jersey Card Show β€” Wayne, NJ
  • The Paragould Event β€” Paragould, AR
  • Cards & More Tour β€” Savannah, GA
  • Additional Sunday shows across Oklahoma, Connecticut, Missouri, and Ohio

The Palmyra event is worth flagging specifically because it is an inaugural show and explicitly includes TCG alongside sports. New shows tend to have softer pricing and less picked-over inventory, and combined sports/TCG floors are still relatively uncommon outside major metros.

Why Mid-August Is a Good Time to Buy

There is a predictable rhythm to the two weeks after The National, and it favors buyers:

Dealers are carrying fresh inventory

Dealers buy heavily at The National. What they bought is now in their cases at regional shows, which means the floors this weekend have material that was not there in July.

Dealers are also carrying leftover inventory

The flip side is just as useful. Anything that did not sell in Rosemont is now sitting in a case for a second time, and dealers are generally more flexible on it. Ask what came back from The National.

Football season has not started

NFL rookie card demand ramps steeply once regular-season games begin. Mid-August is the last stretch where football singles are priced on preseason expectation rather than production. If you have a rookie you believe in, this window is meaningfully cheaper than October.

Practical Notes for the Weekend

  • Bring cash. Still the fastest path to a discount at nearly every table.
  • Go early both days. Saturday morning has the best inventory; Sunday afternoon has the best prices. Serious buyers do both.
  • Check admission and parking in advance. Convention-center shows frequently charge separately for parking, and it can meaningfully change the cost of the trip.
  • Verify hours before you drive. Regional show times shift, and smaller events sometimes reschedule with short notice.

Find a Show Near You

This list covers the largest events, not all of them. Dozens of local shows run every weekend in church halls, VFW posts, hotel ballrooms, and shop back rooms β€” and those are often where the best deals actually are.
