Gen Con 2026 Opens Today: A Naruto TCG Debut, Lorcana's Great Hunny Rescue, and The Hobbit's Second Preview Wave

Gen Con Opens Today in Indianapolis

Gen Con 2026 runs July 30 through August 2 at the Indiana Convention Center, and for trading card collectors this is now one of the two or three most important weekends on the calendar. What used to be a board game and RPG convention has become the place where card publishers announce new games, hand out promos that immediately jump on the secondary market, and give players their first physical look at sets that are still weeks from release.

Here is what is actually happening on the card side over the next four days, and which of it matters if you are not in Indianapolis.

Naruto Card Game Makes Its First Public Appearance

Bandai Namco is using Gen Con for the first real-world debut of the official Naruto Card Game. The game does not launch worldwide until 2027, which makes this weekend the earliest possible point of entry for anyone who wants in on the ground floor.

Bandai is running free beginner Tutorial Sessions with demo decks throughout the convention. Attendees who complete a session receive a gift set containing:

• A CP-001 Chakra Card, Gen Con 2026 Ver. promo
• A branded backpack
• A sticker
• A voucher redeemable for the official playmat when it ships in 2027

Pay attention to that CP-001 promo. A convention-exclusive promo for a game that will not be broadly available for another year is exactly the kind of card that gets very hard to find once the game actually has a player base. Early Bandai convention promos for other franchises have followed this pattern before.

Disney Lorcana Brings a Debut

Lorcana returns to Gen Con Indy for all four days, and the headline is the debut of Illumineer's Quest: The Great Hunny Rescue. Lorcana's Illumineer's Quest products have historically been co-operative, story-driven boxes that sell through quickly and then hold their price better than standard boosters, largely because they are printed to a much tighter run and the exclusive cards inside are not available anywhere else.

Bandai Card Games Fest and Digimon

The BANDAI CARD GAMES Fest 26-27 season kicks off July 30, with Digimon Card Game programming running through the convention. If you play Digimon competitively, this is the start of a new organized play cycle, and Bandai typically pairs season openers with participation promos.

Magic Brings The Hobbit to the Floor

Wizards of the Coast is using Gen Con for the second major wave of The Hobbit previews. Spoiler season opened at MagicCon Amsterdam earlier in July and has been running daily reveals since, with roughly 127 cards public going into this weekend. Gen Con gets showcase displays and community preview events, meaning a large batch of new cards should land publicly over the next four days.

The set releases August 14, with Prerelease Week running August 7 through 13. The chase card everyone is watching is the Gleaming Gold Smaug, limited to roughly 500 copies. Also confirmed are two Scene Boxes, Crack the Plates and Treasures of Smaug, each with three Play Boosters plus six borderless eternal-legal cards that assemble into a panoramic display piece.

If You Are Not There

Convention promos and first-look reveals move secondary market prices within hours, not days. Two practical notes:

Gen Con promos are usually cheapest on the Sunday and Monday immediately after the show, when attendees dump extras, and most expensive three to six months later once the supply is absorbed.

Second, if The Hobbit reveals land the way MagicCon Amsterdam's did, expect sealed Collector Booster pre-order prices to move before the August 14 release. Pre-order pricing on a hyped Universes Beyond set has historically been the floor, not the ceiling. Check with your local game store about prerelease seats for August 7 through 13 now rather than in the first week of August.
