Lorcana Takes Over D23 August 11-16, Then Heads to Disneyland for the North American Championship
Disney Lorcana has a week-long footprint at D23 including a Collection Quest and a game night, with the convention itself running August 14-16 in Anaheim. Two weeks later the North American Championship lands at the Disneyland Hotel. Here is why D23 is a bigger moment for the game than any gaming convention.
Disney Lorcana has spent three years proving it is more than a licensing exercise, and this month it gets its highest-profile stage yet. The game will have a substantial presence at D23, Disney's official fan convention, with Lorcana programming running August 11 through 16 and D23 itself taking place August 14 through 16 at the Anaheim Convention Center.
What Is Actually Happening
Lorcana's D23 footprint is structured across the full week rather than just the convention days. The publicly announced components include:
- A Collection Quest β a scavenger-hunt style activation running in the days before the convention proper
- A game night β a play-focused evening event held ahead of D23
- On-floor programming during the August 14-16 convention window
The pre-convention structure is a deliberate choice. D23 is enormous and its schedule is dominated by film and park announcements. Building Lorcana-specific events in the days beforehand gives the game's community a dedicated space that does not have to compete with a Marvel panel for attention.
Why D23 Is a Bigger Deal Than a Gaming Convention
Lorcana has already established itself at Gen Con and at its own championship circuit. D23 is a different audience entirely.
The people at D23 are Disney superfans first. Many of them are not trading card game players and never have been. But they are exactly the demographic that responds to a beautifully illustrated Elsa card or a Stitch alternate art, and they have demonstrated willingness to spend on Disney collectibles.
Gen Con recruits players. D23 recruits collectors. Lorcana needs both, and it is the only major TCG that can credibly work that room.
That crossover is Lorcana's structural advantage over every competitor. Magic, Pokemon, and One Piece all have to build their audience from gaming outward. Lorcana can pull from a fanbase that already exists, already collects, and already visits theme parks annually.
The Championship Follows Two Weeks Later
D23 is the first half of a big late-summer for the game. The North American Championship runs August 28 through 30 at the Disneyland Hotel, which continues Ravensburger's pattern of staging marquee competitive events at Disney properties rather than generic convention centers.
Note the date collision: that is the same weekend as the Pokemon World Championships in San Francisco and the Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship in Tokyo. The last weekend of August 2026 is arguably the densest competitive TCG weekend on record.
Where Lorcana Sits Right Now
For collectors deciding whether to pay attention, a quick state of the game.
The current set
Wilds Unknown added 204 cards to Core Constructed and shifted the format meaningfully. It remains the most recent full expansion.
The next set
Attack of the Vine is the upcoming release, and it has already reached mass retail channels. Wide retail distribution has been Lorcana's consistent strength and a genuine differentiator from TCGs that are hobby-shop-only.
The collector case
Lorcana's high-end has been driven by enchanted-rarity alternate art cards, which combine low pull rates with the kind of illustration quality that displays well. That is a durable formula. Cards that people want to frame tend to hold value better than cards people only want to play.
If You Are Going to D23
A few practical notes. D23 badges sell out and the convention floor is dense; check the official schedule for exact Lorcana activation times rather than assuming you can wander over. Convention-exclusive promo cards are typically distributed through specific activations rather than at a booth, so knowing the schedule is the difference between getting one and reading about it afterward.
Also worth saying plainly: convention exclusives usually appear on the secondary market within days at a substantial markup, and that markup usually softens within a few weeks. If you cannot get one in Anaheim, patience is a reasonable strategy.
If You Are Not
Most Lorcana announcements get echoed through local game stores within a week, and your local shop is where the game actually lives week to week. Store championships, league nights, and draft events are how the community sustains itself between the big convention moments.
Find a shop near you on The Card Shop Finder and ask what their Lorcana night looks like. The barrier to entry is genuinely low, and it is one of the few TCGs where showing up with a preconstructed deck is a completely normal way to start.
