Day Two at the Biggest Show of the Year
The 46th National Sports Collectors Convention is in full swing at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois, running through August 2. With the opening-day crowds behind us, attention on the floor now shifts to the thing that generates the most sustained buzz every single year: the show-exclusive cards.
These are the cards you cannot buy from a distributor, cannot pre-order, and in most cases cannot obtain at all unless you or someone you know is physically on the floor. That structural scarcity is what makes them the most volatile short-term assets at any card show, and The National produces the scarcest ones of the year.
What Topps Is Doing at Booth 555
Topps ditched the traditional wrapper redemption model for this year's National in favor of a QR-based system at booth 555. Collectors scan the code at the booth to enter, with a limit of one win per SKU per day.
The 2026 Topps National Convention promo set spans a genuinely wide range of licenses:

The one-win-per-SKU-per-day cap is the detail that matters. It means the ceiling on what any single attendee can accumulate is fixed, and it spreads distribution across all five days rather than letting the first-morning crowd clean it out. That generally produces a healthier secondary market and fewer wild day-one price spikes.
Panini's Play: Gold Packs and the VIP Gem Box
Panini's National program centers on the VIP Party on August 1. The 2026 Panini National Gold Packs include an exclusive base set with parallels plus exclusive Marketing Color Blast inserts, a chase category that has developed a serious following.
The bigger swing is the 2026 National VIP Gem Box. Every gem card inside is numbered to three or fewer, and autographs are possible. Numbered-to-three-or-less is about as scarce as mainstream card production gets, and it is why VIP-only product from The National consistently outperforms anything else distributed at the show.
The Resale Math
National exclusives have produced some of the largest short-window premiums in the hobby. A 2018 Bowman Chrome NSCC Red Refractor autograph numbered to five sold for \$20,740. The top handful of National-exclusive sales have cleared \$10,000 each.
Those are outliers, not the median. The overwhelming majority of National promo cards settle into the \$10 to \$60 range within a month of the show closing.
The pattern to understand: exclusive supply is capped on the day the show ends, but demand keeps growing as collectors who could not attend go looking. That produces a predictable curve. Prices spike during the show, dip in the two to three weeks after as attendees liquidate what they pulled, then grind upward over the following six to twelve months. If you are buying rather than selling, the post-show dip in mid-to-late August has historically been the better entry point.
If You Are Selling on the Floor
Selling is generally more favorable during the opening days of The National, when dealers still have fresh cash reserves and are actively hunting premium inventory. By Saturday and Sunday, budgets are committed and offers tighten. Thursday and Friday are the strong sell windows. Saturday and Sunday are better buy windows, particularly for dealers who would rather move inventory than truck it home.

The show runs through Sunday, August 2. Panini's VIP Party lands Saturday, August 1. If you are planning a trip in the back half of the week, Sunday is traditionally the quietest floor day and the best one for negotiating on raw and mid-tier graded inventory.
