Pokemon TCG Mega Evolution Chaos Rising Prerelease Window Opens May 9 With Mega Greninja, Pyroar, Floette, and Dragalge ex

Chaos Rising prerelease events run May 9 through May 17 at Play! Pokemon retailers, two weeks before the May 22 expansion launch. Build and Battle Boxes ship with one of four foil promos plus four packs from the new set.

The Pokemon TCG release calendar shifts into its biggest weekend of May this Saturday. Mega Evolution — Chaos Rising prerelease events kick off May 9 at participating Play! Pokemon retailers, giving Trainers their first crack at the May 22 expansion two weeks early. Build & Battle Box demand is already running hot at local game stores, and the Chaos Rising checklist is shaping up to be one of the most chase-heavy Mega Evolution sets to date.

What is Chaos Rising?

Chaos Rising is the fourth expansion in the ongoing Mega Evolution block, and it is the English equivalent of Japan's Ninja Spinner set. The expansion features over 120 cards, including more than 20 Trainer cards and over 35 cards with special illustrations. The headline mechanic is unchanged — Mega Evolution Pokemon ex stay center stage — but the full chase list adds five new Mega ex, five Pokemon ex, 11 Illustration Rares, 18 Ultra Rare cards, and six Special Illustration Rares.

"Mega Greninja ex is the marquee card and will move boxes by itself, but the sleeper here is Mega Pyroar ex. The art is going to be the breakout Special Illustration Rare of the set."

Prerelease Build & Battle Box Contents

Each Build & Battle Box gives players what they need to enter prerelease tournaments and start drafting decks at home. The configuration is standardized across participating retailers:

  • One 40-card preconstructed deck ready for prerelease play, with one of four unique foil promo cards baked in.
  • Four Mega Evolution — Chaos Rising booster packs to enhance the deck or open as standard packs.
  • Damage counters, a coin, and a deck-style box for storage and transport.

The prerelease window runs May 9 through May 17, with each store setting its own event schedule. Players who cannot make the in-store events can typically buy a take-home Build & Battle Box from participating retailers throughout the same window.

Cards to Watch

Five Mega Evolution Pokemon ex anchor the set: Mega Greninja ex, Mega Pyroar ex, Mega Floette ex, Mega Dragalge ex, and the fifth Mega ex which leaks have suggested is the set's surprise reveal. Beyond the Mega ex, the Special Illustration Rare slot is where the long-term value lives. Six SIRs are confirmed for the English print, and the Ninja Spinner Japanese pulls have already established Mega Greninja ex SIR as the chase. Expect early secondary market pricing on a sealed Booster Bundle to climb past MSRP within 48 hours of the May 22 launch.

Elite Trainer Box and Promo

The standard Elite Trainer Box ships nine booster packs from the expansion plus a full-art Fennekin promo card based on the Illustration Rare from Ninja Spinner. The Pokemon Center exclusive ETB bumps that to 11 packs and adds a Pokemon Center logo variant of the Fennekin promo. The Mega Lucario ex League Battle Deck rounds out the launch lineup and gives competitive players a ready-to-go option that includes useful trainer cards like Secret Box and Fezandipiti ex.

Why Prerelease Weekend Matters

Chaos Rising is the first Mega Evolution release with a full slate of prerelease events since the block began, and it lands in the middle of the standard format rotation that took effect in April. With Iono and other Sword & Shield era staples now out of standard, decks built around the new Mega ex have a clearer path into the post-rotation meta. Prerelease pulls are the first real signal of which Mega ex builds players are gravitating toward, which tends to drive the early secondary market for singles in the two weeks between the prerelease window and the public release.

What to Do This Week

If you have not registered for a prerelease yet, call your local Play! Pokemon store today. Most events fill seats in advance, and the Build & Battle Box allocation is per-event rather than open-stock until the May 17 close. After May 17, the only way to grab a Build & Battle Box is from secondary market sellers until the public retail allocation hits late this month.
