About This Event

The American Legion Post 974 Card Show in Franklin Park runs Saturday, September 19, 2026 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and it is exactly the kind of show that keeps the Chicago hobby honest. No convention center, no ticketing platform, no VIP tier — just a Legion hall full of dealers who have been buying and selling cards in this town for decades. If you have never done a small-hall show, this is the one to start with.

Franklin Park sits just west of O'Hare, which makes Post 974 one of the most centrally reachable rooms in the metro. Collectors come in from Elmwood Park, Norridge, Des Plaines, Bensenville and the northwest side of Chicago proper, and the crowd skews toward people who actually collect rather than people who flip. That shows up in the inventory.

The floor is sports-card heavy. Baseball is king here — expect deep vintage runs from the 1950s through the 1970s, Topps and Bowman singles, complete and partial sets, and stacks of Cubs and White Sox team lots. Football and basketball are well covered, and hockey does better at this show than most, thanks to a durable Blackhawks collector base. Graded slabs are present in showcases, but the real draw is raw material: dime boxes, dollar boxes, star cards in top loaders, and shoeboxes of commons that reward patience. Several dealers carry unopened wax from the 1980s and 1990s, and a handful bring memorabilia — signed baseballs, programs, pennants, Blackhawks and Bears items. A smaller group of tables handles Pokemon, Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh! singles for collectors bringing kids along.

Admission is low — Legion hall shows in the Chicago area typically run free to a few dollars at the door, with kids admitted free — and there is no advance ticket to buy. Parking is free in the Post's own lot, with street parking on the surrounding residential blocks as overflow. The hall is single-level with level entry, and there is usually a small kitchen or snack counter operating, since the Legion runs its own concessions and the proceeds stay with the post.

This show is for the collector who likes to dig. If you want a slabbed modern rookie in a case, you will find a few, but you will get more out of Franklin Park by bringing a want list, a folding stool's worth of patience, and cash in small bills. Vintage set builders do very well here. So do people selling: several Post 974 regulars buy collections outright and will look at what you brought without an appointment.

Practical advice: come at 9:00 AM. The strongest raw vintage is gone within ninety minutes, and dealers trade among themselves before the room fills. Bring cash — a number of tables at Legion shows are cash-only, and even the ones with card readers will price better for paper. Bring penny sleeves and top loaders so you are not carrying loose cards, and bring a list of the specific cards, sets and players you need so you can ask directly instead of hoping to stumble across them. Supporting the post by buying a coffee or a hot dog at the counter is good form.
