Counterspell Games

A big, free play space and generous buy rates make Counterspell Games a Magic-first Jacksonville card shop that also stocks Pokemon and Warhammer.

Counterspell Games is a Magic-first shop in Blanding Boulevard's Suite 12, and the people who play there are blunt about why they come. One writes that it is one of the best places to play Magic in town, and says the drive from the Southside is worth it. Another calls it a favorite store in Jax, citing a large play space that never feels cramped and the fact that there are no play fees.

That play space is the big selling point. Tables are plentiful, which makes a difference on tournament nights and release weekends, and customers describe a friendly, knowledgeable staff who greet you with a smile and help with questions at a moment's notice. A reviewer praises the collection of Magic cards and the accessories on offer, while another says there is a solid card and Warhammer selection. The owners reportedly play the games they sell, so expect advice that comes from experience rather than a script. For a Magic cards Jacksonville shopper, that is a useful quality.

Pokemon has a place here too. A parent building a son's new collection says the selection helped, and notes that the owner shipped several packages when they were not local, with quick delivery and items arriving in perfect condition. On the buying side, a customer says the shop pays higher rates for selling and trade-ins than any other store they have tried. There is one very negative review about tournament organization on a busy night, so arrive early for big events and plan for crowds.

The hours lean toward evenings. Google lists Monday closed, Tuesday through Thursday from 2PM to 10PM, Friday from 2PM until midnight, Saturday from noon until midnight and Sunday from noon to 6PM. Friday and Saturday late nights are the best bet if you want a full table.
