Magic: The Gathering Jumpstart 2022: Booster Box Prices & Sealed

Dec 2022J222 sealed products

Jumpstart 2022 kept the format of the 2020 original - 20-card themed half-decks you shuffle together and play - and added the thing the first one lacked: a Booster Fun treatment. Every J22 pack contains a new card and an anime-style Booster Fun card, and those anime versions turned out to be the entire financial story of the product. Here is the configuration, the themes, the chase cards and what a J22 box costs in September 2026.

Sealed products for Jumpstart 2022

Booster Box

Twenty-four Jumpstart packs of 20 cards. Each pack is a themed half-deck - Eldrazi, Hydras, Goblins, Cats and 42 others - containing one new card and an anime-style Booster Fun card. Two packs make a 40-card deck, and J22 packs mix freely with the original Jumpstart and with the Jumpstart packs printed into Dominaria United, The Brothers' War and later sets. Packs listed around $4.99 at release, making a box roughly $120. In September 2026 sealed boxes sell for $175 to $225, with a market price near $198 and recent sales clustering between $175 and $210.

Booster Pack

Single packs run $8 to $14. As with the original Jumpstart, a labelled pack for a strong theme sells at a premium over an unlabelled one, and the themes carrying Rhystic Study or Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm are the ones sellers price up.

Booster Case

A J22 case is six boxes. Cases are inexpensive relative to the rest of this category and are the sensible purchase for a shop running casual events or a group that wants a long-lived pool of ready-made decks.

J22 shipped no Collector Boosters, no Draft Boosters, no bundle, no box toppers and no serialized cards. The anime treatment is the only Booster Fun element in the product.

Chase cards and Booster Fun treatments

The anime cards are the treatment and the chase. Each pack contains one anime-art Booster Fun card, and for several cards the anime version is worth many times the standard printing - Balan, Wandering Knight is the clearest example, with the anime version far above the ordinary one, and Isu the Abominable behaves the same way. This is a real structural difference from the 2020 Jumpstart, which had no special versions at all.

On raw value, Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm is the set's most expensive card, a new Rat commander that found an audience immediately. Rhystic Study is the marquee reprint and the card that pulls Commander players to the product. Lita Mechanical Engineer, Rodolf Duskbringer, Preston the Vanisher, Pirated Copy and a Karn Liberated reprint in the Tron-themed packet fill out the top end. Below that the pool is what Jumpstart pools always are: a large number of inexpensive commons and uncommons chosen to make themed decks function.

Is Jumpstart 2022 worth buying sealed?

J22 has done better than the original Jumpstart and still does not belong in the "buy sealed and wait" category. A box that cost roughly $120 sells for roughly $198 four years later. That is a genuine gain and it beats the 2020 set comfortably, mostly because the anime cards gave the product a collector angle and because J22 was printed less deeply than a mass-market teaching product.

The reasons not to stack these up are straightforward. Wizards has continued printing Jumpstart packs into premier sets and released Foundations Jumpstart, which keeps the format supplied and dilutes any one release. Expected value on a box sits below box price, so opening to profit is a losing bet - the anime cards are exciting but the vast majority are worth a few dollars. And Rhystic Study, the reprint that drives most of the interest, has been reprinted repeatedly since. Buy a J22 box because twelve ready-made decks for $200 is a good evening, or as a light position in the only Jumpstart product with a real treatment. Do not confuse it with a Masters set.

How to spot fakes, resealed and mapped boxes

The J22 risk profile is theme-picking rather than counterfeiting, exactly as with the original Jumpstart, but the anime slot raises the stakes. A seller who can identify a theme can pull the packets containing Rhystic Study, Ashcoat or the valuable anime cards and sell the remainder as a box. Look for factory shrink with a single clean seam and even tension, no adhesive residue near the flaps, and packs that sit tight inside the box with no shifting. A box priced below market from a seller who simultaneously lists individual J22 themes is a red flag.

For loose packs, buy openly labelled packs at theme-appropriate prices, and buy unlabelled packs only from a box you saw opened. Counterfeit J22 product is not a meaningful problem at these price levels. The more common disappointment is buying a box expecting Collector-style hits and finding that the anime card in each pack is a $2 uncommon, which is what most of them are.

Where to buy Jumpstart 2022 sealed

Local shops frequently still have J22 on the shelf because it was never a hot seller, and some will deal on it, so start with the card shop directory. Card shows are the best venue for buying specific themed packs and loose anime singles. Online, these searches work:
