1996-97 Upper Deck SP Basketball Hobby Box: Premier Prospects, Inserts and Sealed Prices

from $3,399.991 sealed products

1996-97 SP was Upper Deck's premium basketball set in the season the 1996 draft class arrived: Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Steve Nash, Ray Allen, Stephon Marbury. It is a short, 146-card set with the rookies grouped in a 20-card Premier Prospects subset, and a sealed hobby box is one of the scarcer ways to chase Kobe's SP rookie. Here is what a box holds, the insert odds and current prices. Other SP seasons are in our Upper Deck SP Basketball guide.

Box and set

A 1996-97 SP hobby box holds 30 packs of eight cards, 240 cards. The set is only 146 cards long:

  • the veteran base cards;
  • twenty rookies in the Premier Prospects subset at the end.

With a set that short, a box produces plenty of duplicates. The point is the Premier Prospects pulls and the inserts.

The rookies in Premier Prospects

The 1996 class is one of the strongest of the era, and SP put its rookies in one place:

  • #134 Kobe Bryant: the card most buyers open the box for.
  • #141 Allen Iverson: the first overall pick.
  • Steve Nash, Ray Allen and Stephon Marbury are also in the class.

Each Premier Prospects card is one of only 146 in the set, so a 240-card box gives a fair chance at the subset. Whether the Kobe is in it is what decides most boxes.

The 1996 draft, as it played out

The 1996 draft order explains why this class still drives prices:

  • Allen Iverson went first overall to Philadelphia.
  • Stephon Marbury went fourth and Ray Allen fifth.
  • Kobe Bryant was taken thirteenth by Charlotte and traded to the Lakers.
  • Steve Nash went fifteenth to Phoenix.

Four of those five are Hall of Famers, and three of them won MVP awards. Few rookie classes have a list like that, and every premium 1996-97 product is priced off it.

Inserts and odds

InsertCardsOddsPer 30-pack box
Holoview (hologram portrait, etched foil)401:10 packsAbout three
Game Film (die-cut, with a pair of film slides)101:120 packsAbout one in four boxes
SPx Force (four player holograms, die-cut)51:360 packsAbout one in twelve boxes

The Holoviews are the signature SP insert of the mid-1990s, and in a box you will see about three. Game Film and SPx Force are the rare pulls. A Kobe in either of those insert sets is a premium card in its own right.

What sealed boxes ask

BoxeBay asking price, autumn 2026
1996-97 SP hobby box$3,199.99-$3,399.99 (two listings)
1996-97 SP retail boxNone listed

One more listing showed up under this product: a 1997-98 SP box at $3,999.99. That is the following season, without the 1996 rookie class, and not the same box. With two genuine listings the market is thin, and $3,200-$3,400 is an asking range rather than a settled price.

For comparison, a 1996-97 Topps Finest Series 2 box, the other premium Kobe-year product, was listed from $5,000 on the same day.

A 1996-97 Upper Deck flagship hobby box, Upper Deck's mainstream set from the same season, was listed from $749.99. SP sits between the two: a premium Upper Deck product with a small set and hologram inserts, priced well above the flagship and below Finest.

One name confusion to avoid: SPx was a separate Upper Deck product, and "SPx Force" is an insert inside SP. A listing that says only "SPx" is a different box. A 1996-97 SP retail box also exists, and is in our catalogue, but none was listed when we checked. For this season, the hobby box is the format you will find.

Expect to wait for one to appear, and to compare it against the asking prices above.

Open or keep?

Opened, a box gives about 30 chances at the Premier Prospects subset and three Holoviews. The value rides on whether the Kobe arrives, and in what condition: foil and etched surfaces from this period show wear easily, so a clean Kobe that grades high is the payday. Kept sealed, the box is a 30-year-old product of a famous rookie class with a shrinking supply, and that is how most current buyers treat it.

Checking the box

For any four-figure vintage box, prefer one authenticated and sealed by an independent service such as BBCE. Without that, check for thin, tight shrink without a glossy re-wrap, folded seams with no tape, and a box that is not crushed at the corners. Ask the seller to confirm it is 1996-97, not 1997-98, because listings mix the two. Dealers bring boxes like this to larger card shows, where you can inspect them; see our card show calendar.
