The 1997-98 through 2000-01 boxes are pack-heavier and hit-lighter, built around the diamond tier structure plus Diamond Dominance, Diamond Skills and Jordan-specific inserts. Memorabilia is present from 1999-00 onward through the A Piece of History and Game Gear inserts, but there is no per-box guarantee.

Everything else in the line trades in the low hundreds and is priced as rip material rather than as a hold.

The 1998-99 box is the sleeper. It has the Nowitzki, Carter and Pierce rookie class, MJ Sheer Brilliance inserts and the diamond tier structure at its most interesting, and it still sells for a fraction of what comparable Fleer and SkyBox product from the same season brings. Whether that is an opportunity or a verdict on the brand is a judgment call.

For the 1990s and 2004-05 seasons this is one of the cheapest ways into sealed Upper Deck basketball wax, and it opens well: the diamond tiers give every pack a small event, and the boxes deliver a couple of memorabilia cards in the later configurations. As an investment it has not moved much, and there is no obvious catalyst that would change that.

The 2003-04 box is priced on the LeBron rookie class like every other Upper Deck product from that season, and at $2,100 to $3,500 the expected value of the box is well under the ask. That is not a criticism of the product so much as a statement about what a LeBron rookie card is worth. How to spot fakes and resealed boxes

Black Diamond packs from the 2000s are thin and the memorabilia cards inside are thick, which makes searching by feel practical and makes loose packs a bad purchase. Buy boxes.

On the box, factory shrink should sit tight against every panel with folds that match at both ends and a seam along an edge rather than across a face. Reheated wrap ripples along the long sides and often shows a faint cloudiness where the heat gun lingered. Check the flaps for glue residue and for corners that have softened. Because Upper Deck used different box footprints across the run, compare against images of a known sealed box from the same season, not a generic one.

For the 2003-04 box, third-party authentication from Baseball Card Exchange or a comparable service is worth the fee. At two thousand dollars and up you are in the price band where resealing pays, and a certified box is materially easier to resell than a raw one.
