Hobby Box

The format never really changed: one pack of five cards in a keepsake box, with the box itself part of the product. The 2003-04 release carried a $500 price when a premium box cost half that; by 2009-10 it had reached $825. Both guarantee an autographed patch card numbered to 100 or less, and the 2003-04 configuration also delivers an autographed rookie patch card numbered to 225 or fewer.

Hobby Case

A case is three boxes. That is the entire case. Sealed Exquisite cases are the rarest sealed basketball units in the modern era, and when a BBCE-certified 2003-04 case reached auction at Goldin it sold for $341,600, which is a substantial premium over three times the price of a single box. Cases carry that premium because the three boxes were pulled from the same case pack and because the authentication chain is unbroken.

Collegiate-era boxes

Upper Deck brought the name back in 2011-12 and 2013-14 with The Exquisite Twelve Autographs and Exquisite Signatures, built around legends and college players rather than NBA rookies. Those boxes are unlicensed by the NBA and trade in a much smaller market. They are not the same product and should not be priced against the NBA-era boxes.

Key seasons: prices and rookies

The 2003-04 box is the only season with anything resembling a public price history, and even that is thin: a sealed box changed hands at $40,260 in August 2026, and industry coverage has put typical public sales around $50,000. Every row below it should be read as an indicative range rather than a market price. These boxes surface a handful of times a year, mostly through the major auction houses, and two sales of the same season can differ by half.

The 2003-04 gap is no mystery. That season's Exquisite Rookie Patch Autograph checklist is LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh, each numbered to 99, and the LeBron has become the defining modern basketball card. Graded examples have repeatedly cleared six figures, a jersey-numbered /23 parallel set a record in the millions during the 2020-21 boom, and the LeBron and Michael Jordan dual Logoman one-of-one sold privately for $900,000.

The 2009-10 edition deserves its own note. It was the last Exquisite made under the NBA license, it carries Stephen Curry and Ricky Rubio rookies numbered to 225, and Upper Deck reportedly cut production to roughly half the prior year while loading it with premium autographs and patches from remaining inventory. A franchise rookie plus a shortened print run is why it prices above the middle seasons.

Chase cards, parallels and hit rates

The Exquisite Rookie Patch Autograph is the card the line is built on: an on-card signature paired with a multi-color game-worn patch, serial-numbered by tier. Above it sit Exquisite Patches, Extra Exquisite jerseys and patches, dual and triple patch cards, Noble Nameplates using letter patches, and Logoman one-of-ones cut from the jersey's NBA logo. Base cards are numbered to 225 or fewer, with parallel tiers stepping down through Gold /25 to Rainbow one-of-ones.

Autographs are on-card throughout, which is part of why the product held its reputation while sticker autographs took over elsewhere. The hit structure is as simple as the box: five cards, at least one signed patch numbered to 100 or less, and the rest from the base and memorabilia tiers. There are no long-odds pull rates worth quoting; with five cards, what matters is which names are in the checklist.

Is Exquisite Collection worth buying sealed?

For the 2003-04 box the honest framing is that this is a collectible in its own right rather than a rip. Very few people who buy one open it. The box has become a trophy asset traded among high-end collectors and auction houses, and its price is set by that demand rather than by the expected value of five cards. If you open one and do not hit a LeBron, you have destroyed most of what you paid for.

For the middle seasons the arithmetic is conventional and less flattering. A $4,000 box with two hits needs a star autograph to break even, and the 2004-05 through 2006-07 checklists lack a rookie class with that ceiling. The 2007-08 and 2009-10 boxes have a better case on Durant and Curry.

Supply is fixed. Upper Deck cannot make more NBA Exquisite, print runs were small to begin with, and boxes leave the sealed population permanently every time one is opened.

How to spot fakes and resealed boxes

At these prices, buy authenticated wax or do not buy. Baseball Card Exchange certification is the standard for Exquisite, and the case sale referenced above was BBCE certified for exactly that reason. A raw sealed box with no chain of custody should be treated as a claim, not a fact.

The specific risk with Exquisite is not a crude reseal but a careful one. The box is small, the outer wrap is simple, and a single card swap is worth more than the effort. Look for wrap that follows every contour with no slack, folds that mirror each other at both ends, and no seam crossing the printed face. Check that the inner keepsake box and its sleeve show no scuffing from being slid in and out, and compare against photographs of a certified example from the same season, since packaging changed year to year.

Be equally careful with cases. Three boxes shrink-wrapped together is not the same as a factory case with an intact case pack, and the price difference is large.

Where to buy Exquisite Collection sealed

Almost nothing at this level moves through ordinary retail. The major auction houses handle most sealed Exquisite, and high-end dealers at the largest card shows are the realistic in-person venue. Local shops will rarely stock a box but often broker them, and the card shop directory is a way to find a shop that deals in high-end sealed. Online, search precisely and expect few results:
