The 2008-09 box is the best of the cheap seasons. Is Upper Deck MVP worth buying sealed?

As a rip, yes, for most seasons. Under $200 buys 192 cards, a full rookie class and a decent chance at a memorabilia card, which is more entertainment per dollar than almost anything else in this brand. As an investment, no. MVP was printed in volume for mass retail, the base cards are worth cents, and there is no scarcity story.

The 2003-04 box is a partial exception, but even there the honest framing is that you are paying a LeBron premium on a low-end product. MVP's appeal is that it is cheap, and that appeal disappears at $500.

How to spot fakes and resealed boxes

MVP's low price does not make it safe. Cheap product gets resealed too, usually by people repacking searched retail rather than by sophisticated counterfeiters, and blasters are the most common target because the wrap is simple and the packaging is generic.

Check that the shrink is factory-tight with even tension and clean end folds; on a large 24-pack box, reheated film usually shows slack across the top face and a wrinkled seam. Look at the bottom seam of the box for glue that does not match the factory pattern and for flaps that have been re-tucked. If packs are visible through a window or a torn corner, check that pack alignment is uniform, since a repacked box rarely reseats packs perfectly.
