Baseball holds the deepest inventory year-round, spanning vintage Topps and Bowman, 1950s and 1960s stars, extensive 1970s and 1980s material for set builders, team and player lots, and modern MLB rookies with numbered parallels and on-card autographs. Football is at peak interest in December with the NFL season heading into its final stretch, so expect rookie patch autographs, Prizm, Optic and Select parallels and vintage stars from the 1960s and 1970s. Basketball is active with the NBA season well underway, and hockey, UFC, boxing and soccer each maintain genuine table presence. Graded slabs from PSA, SGC and BGS fill locked cases across the hall, sealed wax boxes are available from several dealers, and dollar, quarter and dime boxes sit under nearly every table. Pokemon singles and sealed product cover the trading card game crossover, joined by memorabilia, signed baseballs and photos, vintage programs and ticket stubs, comics and collectible figures.
Hours run 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, one morning window. Five hours is ample for a compact hall, and the schedule leaves your whole Saturday afternoon free for whatever December has already committed you to. Admission at VFW-hosted editions has historically been free or a modest door donation benefiting the post, with no advance ticketing required. Carry a few dollars for the door in case there is a charge. Children are welcome accompanied by an adult.
The VFW Phoenix hall sits just off 7th Street near Dunlap Avenue in the Sunnyslope area of north Phoenix, minutes from Interstate 17 or State Route 51. Parking is free in the on-site surface lot with street parking nearby as overflow. The hall is a single air-conditioned room, compact and evenly lit, and that scale is a real advantage: you can price-check the same card at three tables in five minutes, which is the simplest defense against overpaying.
The show fits casual collectors, set builders and families who find large conventions overwhelming, and it is a good first show for anyone new to the hobby. Serious buyers should keep it on the list, because small hall shows reliably produce underpriced raw vintage and mispriced modern parallels, and December pricing is softer than any other month. Sellers do particularly well in December, since several dealers here actively buy collections and have year-end cash to deploy.
Tips: be at the door at 8:00 AM, since the best material moves in the first hour. Bring cash for the deepest discounts. Carry a want list with ceiling prices so you can move quickly and decisively. Bring sleeves and top loaders for raw pickups, and a bright light or loupe if you inspect vintage centering and corners closely. If you are shopping for gifts, graded slabs present best and need no explanation. If you are selling, sort your material by sport and era and be ready to name a number.
