Owlbear Canyon Games is a laid-back Tanque Verde Road game store in Tucson known for twice-weekly casual Commander nights, sealed MTG packs and board games.
Tucked out toward the foothills on Tanque Verde Road, Owlbear Canyon Games is a small, owner-run game store that feels more like a friend's game room than a retail floor. The shop at 8808 E Tanque Verde Rd serves Tucson's northeast side, a part of town without many places to sit down and play.
Magic: The Gathering players come for the Commander nights. The store runs casual Commander twice a week, on Monday and Thursday, with a relaxed, low-stakes table culture that suits players who want fun games rather than cutthroat competition. Sealed MTG product is priced competitively, so cracking packs at the table is part of the routine. The shop does not focus on singles, so bring your deck ready to play or plan to build from sealed. For casual MTG in Tucson's northeast, it is one of the easier tables to join.
Board games are the other half of the business. The shelves mix classic titles with newer releases, and plenty of tables are set up for board game nights and tabletop sessions. A resident shop dog is a fixture behind the counter and a favorite with regulars. The store's website keeps a Google Calendar of upcoming events, and there is an active Discord and Facebook page for schedule updates.
The schedule is weekday-focused: 2PM-8PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 2PM-10PM on Wednesday, and closed Saturday and Sunday. Commander nights on Monday and Thursday are the best time to find a full table, while afternoons are good for browsing board games. Check the calendar before you go, since event times can change.
Parking is easy along Tanque Verde, and the store is a convenient stop for anyone coming from Sabino Canyon or the eastern foothills neighborhoods. Bring sleeves, a Commander deck and a little patience for the friendly four-legged greeter.
