The most expensive MLS card ever sold belongs to a 16-year-old. Cavan Sullivan's 2025 Topps Chrome MLS Rookie Debut Patch Autograph, numbered 1 of 1, closed at Alt over the weekend for $324,000. That is the highest publicly reported price for any Major League Soccer card, and more than three times the previous Sullivan record of $90,158, set in late July by his 1-of-1 Rookie Arrival Patch Autograph from the same product.
Two 1-of-1 cards from the same set, sold six weeks apart, and the second one went for 3.6 times the first. That gap is the story.
Who Cavan Sullivan is
Sullivan is a midfielder for the Philadelphia Union. He made his MLS debut on July 17, 2024 at 14 years and 293 days old, which made him the youngest player ever to appear for a major North American professional sports team. He signed a homegrown contract with the Union that includes a pre-arranged move to Manchester City once he is old enough to transfer under FIFA rules, which is the part that makes him a global asset rather than a domestic one.
The hobby has been building toward this for two years. The 2024 debut created the card. The 2025 Topps Chrome MLS release put the Debut Patch Auto into packs. The July sale of the Arrival Patch Auto set the first real ceiling. And then the Debut Patch, which is the flagship configuration in the Topps Chrome MLS program and the one with the oversized DEBUT patch on the front, came to market and blew past it.
Why the Debut Patch sold for so much more than the Arrival Patch
Both cards are 1-of-1 autographs of the same player from the same product. The difference is which patch is on the card and what that patch means.
- Rookie Debut Patch Autograph (RDPA): Carries the patch worn on the player's jersey during his actual MLS debut. It is the centerpiece of the product, the direct descendant of the Rookie Debut Patch program that produced the Paul Skenes and Cooper Flagg cards, and the one that gets the headline.
- Rookie Arrival Patch Autograph: A secondary patch program from the same set. Real, rare, and desirable, but not the one that carries the debut moment.
Buyers at this level are paying for the story as much as the card. A debut patch from the youngest debut in North American pro sports history, on a player already slated for Manchester City, is one of the cleanest stories a modern card can carry. The Arrival Patch has the same signature and the same player but not the same sentence.

The Debut Patch program has become the most reliable way for Topps to produce a six- or seven-figure card out of a new product, and Sullivan's result slots in below the biggest names while still being remarkable for the sport.

For context, before this summer the MLS card market had never produced a six-figure sale of any kind. It has now produced two in six weeks, both for the same teenager.
What it means for the rest of his cards
A 1-of-1 sale is a ceiling, not a floor. It tells you what one buyer would pay for the single best version of the card. It does not directly reprice the numbered parallels and base autographs underneath it, but it does drag attention toward them, and attention is what moves the middle of the market.
If you own Sullivan cards, the ones most likely to benefit are the low-numbered Topps Chrome MLS autographs and any refractor parallel numbered under 25. Base autos and unnumbered refractors will get a bump from the headline and then settle. Cards from products without an on-card auto, including base rookies, are the last to move and the first to give it back.
The bigger question is timing. Sullivan is 16 and under contract with Philadelphia until he can move abroad. If the Manchester City transfer goes through as planned, his MLS rookie cards become the only American-league cards he will ever have, and the debut patch becomes a relic of the one season he spent as a kid in Chester, Pennsylvania before leaving for the Premier League. That is the scarcity thesis buyers are pricing in. It is also a bet on a career that has played fewer than 40 professional matches, and every 16-year-old prodigy in history has been priced on projection until they were not.
