Wizards Canceled the Star Trek Beginner Box Outright. If You Preordered, Here Is What to Do.

The Beginner Box Is Gone, Not Delayed

On September 21, Wizards of the Coast published a short statement: due to delays in production, logistics and shipping, the Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek Beginner Box will no longer be produced. It has been canceled in all regions. The box was scheduled to release November 13, 2026 alongside the rest of the Star Trek set, and Wizards says no other Star Trek products are affected.

That last line matters. The Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander decks and the rest of the Star Trek lineup are still coming. What you have lost is the entry-level product.

What Was in It

Per ICv2's product breakdown, the Beginner Box was a $119.99 starter kit built to teach two people to play using Star Trek cards. It included two instant-play decks, eight Jumpstart-style themed half-decks, a rules reference booklet, two playmats, five double-sided tokens and two Spindown life counters. For a franchise with a huge audience that has never touched Magic, it was the on-ramp. Star Trek fans who wanted to try the game without learning Commander first now have to start with a Starter Kit from a different set or a friend's decks.

If You Preordered

Wizards is not handling refunds directly. Its statement tells preorder customers to contact the local game store or retailer where they placed the order. Here is how to approach that conversation:

• Ask for a refund or store credit, your choice. Most shops will offer credit first because it keeps the money in the store. If you would rather have cash back, say so. You paid for a product that will not exist.
• Ask about an allocation swap. Some shops will let you move your preorder deposit onto a Star Trek Collector Booster box or Commander deck, which are still shipping. If those are allocated, being an existing preorder customer may get you a spot.
• If you preordered from a big-box retailer or online marketplace, watch for an automatic cancellation email and check that the charge actually reverses. Third-party marketplace sellers who took preorders are the ones most likely to go quiet.

The Bigger Pattern at Wizards

ICv2 put this cancellation in context, and the context is not flattering. Wizards announced Reality Fracture Play Booster shortages in August, blamed in part on low water levels in the Panama Canal delaying shipping. It followed that with a second round of Reality Fracture product delays this month. Before that, The Hobbit prerelease was hit by Play Booster shipping problems that left some stores short for their events. A trade columnist at ICv2 ran a piece last week titled "Reality Fracture Shipping Times Fractured."

Three products in a row with supply problems is a trend, and the Beginner Box is the first one Wizards chose to cancel rather than push. That suggests the November window was already full: Reality Fracture releases October 2, Star Trek lands November 13, and Wizards would rather protect the boosters that drive store events than ship a starter product late into December.

What It Means for MagicCon Atlanta and Local Stores

Wizards said events that planned to include the Beginner Box, including MagicCon: Atlanta, will have their plans updated, with details to come. Local stores that were planning learn-to-play nights around the box for November will need a replacement. If you run a shop, the practical substitute is the existing Foundations Starter Kit paired with Star Trek promo cards, and it is worth asking your distributor now whether Star Trek Play Booster allocations are firm.
