The NFL Kicks Off Tonight, and Every Rookie Who Plays Is Wearing a Future 1/1 on His Jersey

The NFL season opens tonight in Seattle, with the Patriots and Seahawks replaying last February's Super Bowl at Lumen Field. Kickoff is 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC. For most fans that is the story. For collectors, the story is a small square of fabric stitched onto the jerseys of every rookie who takes the field for the first time.

Starting with this game, every NFL rookie wears a Debut Patch on his jersey during his first regular-season appearance. After the game, the patch comes off, gets authenticated, and ends up embedded in a one-of-one autographed Topps card that ships in a 2027 product. One patch, one player, one first game, one card. Topps announced the program August 26, and tonight is the first time it goes live.

Why This Is a Bigger Deal Than It Sounds

The hobby has spent three years learning exactly what a Debut Patch is worth. Fanatics and Topps introduced the concept in MLB in 2023. The Paul Skenes Rookie Debut Patch Auto sold for $1.11 million in March 2025. The program moved to the NBA last season, and the Cooper Flagg Debut Patch Auto, pulled from a Rhode Island box in August, goes to auction at Fanatics Collect tomorrow, September 10, with real speculation that it could match or pass the Skenes number. Cavan Sullivan's MLS Debut Patch Auto sold for $324,000 last week and set a record for the entire league.

Football is the biggest card market in North America, and its rookie class is the most valuable rookie class in the hobby every single year. Applying the Debut Patch template here was inevitable. What changes tonight is that the first cards in that lineage begin being created in real time, game by game, whether anyone is watching or not.

Who Debuts Tonight

Fernando Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick and the cover athlete on 2026 Topps Flagship Football, opens the season on the Raiders' bench. His Debut Patch is not tonight. That is worth saying out loud, because the value of a Debut Patch card is partly the player and partly the story of the debut itself, and Mendoza's first snap will be a bigger television moment whenever it arrives.

Tonight's debuts come from the two teams on the field. Seahawks running back Jadarian Price, a first-round pick out of Notre Dame, is expected to play. So is Patriots offensive tackle Caleb Lomu. Any rookie on either roster who plays a snap earns a patch. That includes linemen, special teamers, and practice-squad call-ups. Most of those cards will be modest. A handful will not be, and nobody knows tonight which handful.

How the Mechanics Work

• The patch is worn once. It is removed after the player's first game and authenticated. It is not reused, and there is no second copy.
• The card is a 1/1 and autographed. Every Debut Patch card in MLB and NBA has been a single-copy signed card, and Topps has said the NFL version follows the same format.
• It ships in 2027 product. Topps has not named the set. In basketball, the cards landed in Chrome Update. In baseball, they have appeared across Topps Chrome and other flagship-tier releases. Expect the football versions in a fall 2027 Topps or Topps Chrome football release.
• Every debut counts, not just draft picks. Undrafted rookies who make the field earn a patch. In baseball, some of the most talked-about Debut Patch pulls have been late-bloomers rather than top picks.

What Collectors Should Do With This Information

Nothing you can buy today is a Debut Patch card. The cards do not exist yet. What you can do is understand how the existence of a future 1/1 changes the market for the cards that do exist.

The Debut Patch will become the single most valuable card for every rookie in this class. It sits above the Flagship FoilFractor 1/1, above the Bowman Football 1st Bowman superfractor, above everything. In practice, that has not hurt the market for the cards beneath it. The Skenes sale in 2025 lifted his entire card market. The Flagg Debut Patch consignment in August did the same for every other Flagg rookie. A million-dollar headline sale is advertising for every other version of that player's card.

For the average collector, the play is the same as it has always been: buy the rookies you believe in, at the tier you can afford, and let the top of the market do the marketing for you. If Mendoza throws for 4,000 yards this season, a Flagship Real One auto bought this month will be worth more next spring, and the eventual Debut Patch auction will only amplify that.

The Local Shop Angle

Debut Patch cards get pulled from sealed product, and sealed product gets sold in card shops. The Flagg card came out of a hobby box bought at a shop in Rhode Island. The Sullivan card came out of a Topps Chrome MLS box. When 2027 football product ships with 250-plus NFL Debut Patch cards spread across the print run, the chance of a life-changing pull will drive traffic into shops that stock it. That is a year away, but it is coming, and shop owners who track which rookies actually debuted this season will have a real edge in knowing what is in the checklist.
