Pokemon TCG Mega Evolution Pitch Black Confirmed for July 17 With Mega Darkrai ex as the Set Mascot

The Pokemon Company has officially confirmed the next major Mega Evolution expansion. Pitch Black arrives July 17, 2026, with Mega Darkrai ex as the marquee chase card and a full slate of Sinnoh-themed Trainer Special Illustration Rares.

The Pokemon Company has officially confirmed the next major TCG expansion. Pokemon TCG: Mega Evolution — Pitch Black arrives worldwide on July 17, 2026, and it positions Mega Darkrai as the marquee card of the entire Mega Evolution arc. Pitch Black is the English localization of the Japanese set Abyss Eye, and Pokemon.com confirmed the date and key art this week.

What We Know About Pitch Black

Pitch Black is the third major Mega Evolution main-series expansion, following the May 22 launch of Mega Evolution — Chaos Rising and the prior Mega Shine and Pulsing Aura sets that have anchored Pokemon TCG Pocket through the spring. The English print run is expected to mirror Chaos Rising in scope: a 120-plus card base set with a heavy concentration of Mega Pokemon ex chase cards and an expanded Trainer subset.

Confirmed Cards

The Pokemon Company has revealed a small handful of cards as of today. The set list is locked but only the headline pulls have been publicly shown:

  • Mega Darkrai ex — set mascot. Featured on the booster wrapper, Elite Trainer Box, and Pokemon Center exclusive ETB. Speculators have been positioning on Darkrai for months.
  • Mega Houndoom ex — confirmed in the early reveals, leaning into the Dark-type theme.
  • Multiple Special Illustration Rare Trainers tied to Sinnoh-region characters.

Format Implications

Pitch Black is the second consecutive expansion designed entirely around Mega Evolution mechanics. With the G-regulation rotation that took effect on March 26 digitally and April 10 in-person, the standard format has fully shifted into Mega-focused archetypes. Mega Darkrai ex is expected to anchor a Dark-type aggro deck targeting recovery-heavy Mega Greninja ex builds from Chaos Rising.

The transition into the Mega era is now complete. Every set on the 2026 calendar is a Mega Evolution set, and the meta is rotating around which Mega ex hits the best combination of HP, attack ceiling, and energy curve.

Pre-Order Outlook

Pre-orders for Pitch Black product have not officially opened on Pokemon Center, but the typical eight-week lead window points to pre-orders going live around May 22 — the same day Chaos Rising hits shelves. Expect:

  • Booster Boxes (36 packs)
  • Elite Trainer Boxes (standard + Pokemon Center variant)
  • Booster Bundles, 3-Pack Blisters, and Single Pack Blisters
  • A Pitch Black Build & Battle Box for prerelease events, expected the weekend of July 4–6

Speculation Watch

The smart-money speculation play is sealed Mega Evolution — Mega Shine product. As the first set in the Mega arc, Mega Shine is now positioned similarly to how Hidden Fates was positioned during the Sword & Shield era — a thin-print early entry that could spike once the arc concludes. Expect dealer pricing on Mega Shine ETBs to creep up through the summer as Pitch Black hype builds.

For Mega Darkrai specifically, Japanese Abyss Eye sealed product began trading on YJ Auctions this week at roughly 30% above Chaos Rising equivalents. That premium is likely to compress once English distribution information firms up, but it confirms the speculator class believes Darkrai is the strongest Mega chase since Mega Greninja.

Mark July 17 on the calendar, and if you missed Chaos Rising prereleases on May 9-17, do not miss Pitch Black prereleases in early July.
