The First Yu-Gi-Oh! Set of 2027 Has a Date
Konami unveiled Immortal Phoenix on September 22, and it will be the first Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG core booster of 2027, hitting retail on January 29, 2027. Packs will carry a $4.49 MSRP. The theme is built around the Shadow Realm era of the original anime, and the headline mechanic is a new family of Sun God cards tied to The Winged Dragon of Ra.
What the Sun God Cards Do
Immortal Phoenix introduces 10 new Sun God cards, per ICv2's report. The centerpiece is The Immortal Sun God, which can summon The Winged Dragon of Ra directly or discard other Sun God cards to return itself from the graveyard. That is the loop the archetype wants: cycle Sun God monsters into the grave, recur The Immortal Sun God, and eventually put Ra on the field without the three-tribute cost that has kept it out of competitive play for two decades.
The supporting cast will be familiar to anyone who watched the Battle City arc. The named cards include Helpoemer, Chanter of the Sun God; Makyura, Destructor of the Sun God; Gil Garth, Exterminator of the Sun God; Viser Des Shock, Tormentor of the Sun God; and Lava Golem, Steelcage of the Sun God. Those are all Marik and Rare Hunter cards from the original series, re-cut as Sun God support.
Set Breakdown
- 100 cards total: 10 Secret Rares, 14 Ultra Rares, 26 Super Rares and 50 Commons.
- Extended-art treatments: five cards will be available as extended-art Ultra Rares and as Starlight Rares.
- Starlight Rares: 20 cards in the set will have a Starlight Rare version. That is a large Starlight pool for a core set and will drive a lot of the box-opening value.
Why Collectors Should Care Before January
Egyptian God cards move the market every time
Ra, Obelisk and Slifer have been printed in dozens of forms, and every new playable support wave pulls the older versions up with it. The Winged Dragon of Ra promos, especially the earlier foil printings and the Sphere Mode and Immortal Phoenix variants, are the ones to watch. If you own a clean copy of any Ra printing, do not sell it in December.
Starlight Rares are the real chase
Twenty Starlights in one set means the pull rate per box will feel generous compared to sets with a handful, but the top two or three Starlights will still carry the set's value. If The Immortal Sun God or the Ra reprint gets a Starlight, expect that single card to be worth more than a sealed box on release weekend, which is exactly what happened with the top Starlights in this year's earlier sets.
The timing is unusual
Konami typically announces core sets three to four months out, so a September reveal for a late-January release is right on schedule. What is notable is that this drops after the holiday sets and after any expected winter banlist, which means the format Sun God enters will look different from the one we are playing today. Do not preorder cases on the assumption that Ra is instantly competitive.
How to Play It at Your Local Shop
Yu-Gi-Oh! core sets usually get a Premiere event weekend at local stores in the days before wide release. If Immortal Phoenix follows the pattern, your shop will run those events around January 29, and preorders for booster boxes will open in November through distributors. Ask your shop now to put you on the list. Core boosters at $4.49 are among the cheapest packs in the hobby, and a Premiere weekend is the best place to open them because you can trade the Starlights on the spot.
