Dragon Star Hobbies

Open till 10PM most nights on Barnett Shoals, Dragon Star runs Athens' busiest Pokemon league and caps hot singles so scalpers don't clear the shelf.

Ask an Athens collector where to go first and Dragon Star Hobbies comes up before anything else. The shop on South Barnett Shoals Road has been running long enough to become the default — 344 Google reviews and a 4.7 average, with regulars who describe having gone to every other card store in town and coming back here anyway.

The Pokemon program is the standout. Sunday league draws families, and the staff have a reputation for walking complete beginners through their first deck without condescension; one parent wrote about bringing a kid in for the first time and having Tim, who runs league, explain the whole format from scratch. Boosters, tins and ready-to-play league decks are all kept in stock, so a newcomer can show up empty-handed and leave able to play. Magic Commander is the other constant, and Yu-Gi-Oh! still has a table most weeks.

A detail worth knowing about Pokemon cards Athens shoppers appreciate: the shop puts per-customer limits on hot product specifically to keep resellers from clearing a release the morning it lands. That policy is why the shelves here tend to still have something on them a week into a set.

The hours are the other reason to plan around this one. Doors are open 10AM to 10PM Monday through Thursday and Saturday, until 11PM on Fridays, and 11AM to 7PM on Sundays — an unusually long day for a local game store, and the late Friday close is when the room is fullest. Parking is in the lot out front; the space is large enough that showing up mid-afternoon on a weekday usually means having a table to yourself if you just want to sort cards in peace.
