Japanese imports drive this Route 291 shop — the metro's deepest Gunpla wall, Pokemon cards, and candy you won't find at the Asian grocers.

Most shops on an Independence card shop list are card-first with a hobby sideline. Build Up! runs the other direction, and that is precisely what makes it worth the stop. The specialty is Japanese import hobby: Bandai Gunpla stacked wall to wall, Kotobukiya Frame Arms, Bandai's 30 Minute Missions line, Armored Core kits, water transfer decals, paints and build tools, and anime figures. Customers report driving thirty to forty minutes specifically for the kit selection, which skews heavily toward High Grade with lighter Master Grade and Real Grade stock.

Trading cards live alongside all of it, with Pokemon the main line, and every card directory covering eastern Jackson County lists Build Up! among Independence's card destinations. The pairing works better than it sounds — the same customer buying a kit is often the customer buying Japanese-market TCG product.

The third thing on the shelves is food. Build Up! stocks imported Japanese snacks, candy and drinks, and reviewers single out the selection specifically because it includes things the local Asian groceries do not carry. It is a small impulse-buy corner that regulars treat as part of the reason to come.

The staff are the differentiator people write about. This is an owner-operated shop where the person behind the counter knows the anime and manga source material behind the kits and is happy to talk about it at length. Inventory turns over fast enough that repeat visits find genuinely new stock, which is not true of every model shop.

Two practical notes. It is Suite E in a commercial strip on Route 291 in east Independence, roughly two and a half miles from Independence Center, with lot parking out front. And because it is a small operation, the door occasionally gets locked mid-shift — at least one reviewer drove half an hour and found a handwritten sign. Hours run 10AM to 7PM Monday through Saturday and 11AM to 6PM Sunday, but if you are making a special trip, phone first.
