Comics-first Durham institution on 15-501 that also runs a trading card and CCG section — non-sport sets, sealed packs, and sleeves under one roof.
Sitting on Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard between the two cities it serves, Ultimate Comics is the Triangle's largest comic shop by floor space, and the trading card and CCG racks live inside that larger operation rather than in a room of their own. Collectors come for new issues and back-issue longboxes, then leave with packs, non-sport sets, and supplies.
The card side skews toward CCGs and non-sport trading cards — the kind of licensed sets that comic shops have stocked since the early nineties and that most dedicated sports shops in Durham no longer bother with. Comic supplies and card supplies share shelf space, so sleeves, toploaders, and boxes are easy to grab on the same trip.
Wednesday is the day to plan around. The shop opens at 8am on new-comic day, four hours earlier than any other morning, and closes at 8pm — a full twelve-hour window that regulars build their week around. The rest of the schedule is steady 11am to 7pm Monday through Saturday, with a shorter noon-to-6pm Sunday.
Beyond cards, the store carries statues, action figures, store exclusives, graphic novels, apparel, and vintage and import toys. It is kids-friendly and participates in Free Comic Book Day, which makes it a reasonable first stop for a collector bringing along someone who is not yet in the hobby.
If you want a shop whose whole inventory is trading cards Durham has more focused options; if you want cards alongside four decades of comic-shop stock, this is the room.
