Reading's longest-running comics-and-cards hybrid, where Friday Night Magic runs until 11PM and the Pokemon singles case sits beside the back-issue longboxes.
Friday is the night to plan around at Golden Eagle Comics & Games. The shop stretches its hours to 11PM only on Fridays, and the reason is Friday Night Magic — a Modern-format event at 7PM with a $7 entry and a play booster awarded per round win. The play space has high ceilings and plenty of natural light, which is not something you can say about most game rooms, and the tables stay open for pickup games long after the last round is called.
The floor plan splits cleanly. One half is a comics shop in the traditional sense: Golden Age through current issues, graphic novels, trade paperbacks, and a rotating shelf of statues and busts. The other half is the card counter, where Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, and Yu-Gi-Oh! singles live under glass alongside sealed product. Sports cards have a permanent home here too, which makes this Reading card shop unusual — most local stores commit to either TCG or sports, not both. Warhammer 40K, HeroClix, and Dungeons & Dragons round out the shelves.
The community side is the draw for regulars. Organized play runs most days of the week, not just Fridays, and the mix skews toward players who show up to actually play rather than flip. If you are hunting Pokemon cards Reading collectors have already picked over, come on a restock day rather than a weekend afternoon; the singles case turns over fast.
Reviews are not uniformly glowing, and it is worth knowing what you are walking into. Some longtime comics customers have said the book wall has thinned as the store leaned harder into card gaming, and that service can be brisk if you are not a subscriber. Card players tend to report the opposite experience. Treat it as a card-first shop with a comics department attached and the 4.3-star average makes sense.
Practical notes: the store sits on the North 5th Street Highway corridor just north of the city, with its own lot and easy parking. It is closed Mondays. Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday run 11AM to 7PM, Sunday closes early at 5PM, and Friday is the long night. Call ahead around holidays.
