Hobby Box
Every season used the same configuration: 1 pack of 5 cards containing 1 graded autograph, 1 further autograph and 2 memorabilia cards. The graded card is the reason the product exists and the reason for the name, since it arrives encapsulated rather than raw. That also means the box does what almost no other sealed product does: it hands you a slabbed autograph without a grading submission or a wait.
FOTL (First Off The Line)
The 2019-20 edition offered a FOTL configuration that swapped the standard graded card for an exclusive graded rookie jersey autograph, keeping the additional autograph and two memorabilia cards. FOTL Encased is scarce and does not list often, so expect a premium over hobby when one appears.
Hobby Case
An Encased case is 8 boxes across all three seasons. That is a large case for a product with four hits per box, and it explains why Encased was a fixture in group breaks during its run despite the modest checklist.

The 2018-19 boxes are the outlier and it is not a mystery why: a Luka Doncic or Trae Young autograph that arrives already graded is exactly the kind of card this format was built to deliver. That season has recorded sales from roughly $830 up past $2,100 depending on the week. The 2019-20 boxes, despite carrying Zion and Morant, have drifted down since a 2022 peak and are now the cheapest way into the product. All three seasons trade only a handful of times a year, so treat these bands as guidance rather than a market price.
Chase cards, parallels and hit rates
The graded autograph is the headline, with rookie signatures the cards that carry the box. Around it sit the memorabilia sets built on jersey swatches, including multi-piece triple-jersey cards, plus veteran and legend autographs. Parallels run on numbered colour tiers down to 1/1, and the numbering is generally tight enough that a coloured parallel of a good rookie is genuinely scarce.
The important structural point is that the grade you receive is the grade the card was given at the factory, and it is not always high. A box can deliver a marquee rookie autograph in a mid grade, which caps its value in a way a raw card would not. That risk is priced into the product and is one reason Encased never built the following that Immaculate or National Treasures did.
Is Panini Encased worth buying sealed?
Encased sits in an awkward spot. The four hits per box are real, but the checklist is shallower than Panini's flagship high-end products and the pre-assigned grade removes the upside of grading a clean card yourself. As a rip it is reasonable at 2019-20 prices and expensive at 2018-19 prices. As a sealed hold, the case for 2018-19 is the strongest in the line and rests entirely on Doncic; the case for the other two seasons is weak. Set against that, the line is finished. Only three basketball seasons exist, supply is fixed, and Panini no longer holds an NBA licence, so nothing new can dilute it.
How to spot fakes and resealed boxes
A five-card box with a slab inside is an obvious target for searching, so inspect carefully. Genuine boxes carry tight factory shrink over a printed outer box with a clean seam and no adhesive residue; a resealed box often shows slack wrap or a doubled seam. Because there is a graded slab inside, a legitimate sealed box has a distinct rigidity and does not rattle, so ask for a video of the box being handled rather than a stock photo. Confirm the season on the box art, since all three years share similar branding and the 2018-19 boxes are worth two to three times the 2017-18 boxes. Buy from sellers with sealed-box feedback and avoid loose boxes offered without their shipper.
