Hobby Box
The modern Obsidian hobby box is a single seven-card pack, twelve boxes to a case, with two autographs and one memorabilia card. That has been the shape since the early 2020s; the 2018-19 debut was a five-card box with two autographs sold only through Panini's own store. Distributor pricing for 2024-25 was $449.95, which puts Obsidian a tier below Spectra and a tier above Origins.
FOTL (First Off The Line)
FOTL boxes come direct from Panini before the wide release and add a FOTL-exclusive autograph, numbered /27 or lower in 2024-25, plus a FOTL-only base parallel numbered /16 or lower, on top of the standard autograph and relic. That is effectively an extra hit per box, and the premium reflects it. FOTL cases have carried asking prices in the $7,000 range for 2024-25.
Hobby International Box
The International box is a six-card, one-pack configuration at $149.95 with a single autograph or relic and its own International parallels, twenty boxes to a case. It is the entry point to the product and the only way to get the International-flagged colors, which matters for parallel collectors chasing a complete rainbow.
Hobby Case
Twelve boxes. The scarcest Electric Etch tiers and the 1/1 patterns sit deep enough in the print run that a case is a realistic minimum if you want a shot at them, and case pricing tracks close to twelve times the box.

The 2023-24 season is far and away the strongest, because Wembanyama's Obsidian rookie autographs are among the more desirable cards of his class and the box only holds three hits. After that the market is flatter than you might expect: 2019-20 sits close to 2022-23 despite the Zion and Morant class, largely because Obsidian was printed more heavily in that era than its price suggested. The 2018-19 debut is the genuine scarcity in the line, but it almost never appears sealed because it sold in small quantities directly from Panini.
Chase cards, parallels and hit rates
Electric Etch is the parallel system and the visual identity: etched foil colors laid over the black stock, running from unnumbered Caldera, Red Flood and International versions down through numbered tiers around /125, /75, /50, /25 and /3, finishing at the Ashen Flood and Vibrant Mojo 1/1s. Because the base card count per box is tiny, most of a box's parallels arrive on the hits rather than on base cards, which is why an Obsidian autograph is so often a numbered one.
Autograph sets are the real checklist. Rookie Jersey Autographs, Eruption Autographs and Jersey Ink carry the rookie class; Galaxy Ink, Magmatic, Volcanic and Twilight Signatures cover veterans and legends; Scorched Signatures and Atomic Initials joined for 2024-25. Relics come from Cutting Edge, Dusk Memorabilia, Eclipse Materials and Solar Swatches. Panini does not publish per-set odds, so a box's outcome is genuinely random within the two-auto guarantee.
Is Panini Obsidian worth buying sealed?
Obsidian sits in an awkward place. It is expensive enough that a bad box hurts, but not so exclusive that the floor is protected the way it is in Flawless or National Treasures. Three hits from a $450 box means each one needs to average $150 to break even, and the median Obsidian autograph does not. What has worked is buying the franchise-rookie seasons and holding: 2023-24 has roughly doubled off release. The other consideration now is that Obsidian is a licensed-only line. No 2025-26 edition has been announced, and if none arrives, every Obsidian box in existence carries NBA logos, which is a meaningful supporting factor for the seasons already printed.
How to spot fakes and resealed boxes
A one-pack, seven-card box gives a reseller almost nothing to hide behind and everything to gain, so treat photographs of the seal as non-negotiable. Check the tamper strip across the flap, look for adhesive residue or a slightly cloudy patch where a strip has been lifted, and make sure the shrink wrap is machine-tight at all four corners. International boxes are frequently listed as hobby because the artwork is similar at thumbnail size and the price difference is large; confirm the box says Hobby International before paying a hobby price. FOTL boxes carry printed FOTL branding on the box itself. Weighing is useless here since every card in the box is the same stock.
Where to buy Panini Obsidian sealed
Shops that get an allocation usually price the current season at or near distributor cost, which beats the market on release; use the card shop directory to find one.
