1st Edition booster box
A 1st Edition Fossil box holds 36 packs across the Lapras, Zapdos and Aerodactyl arts, and the wrap carries the 1st Edition wording along the front. Sales through 2026 have run from roughly $10,000 for a box with wrap wear up to $30,000 or a little more for a clean, authenticated example sold at auction. Fossil 1st Edition is more available than Jungle 1st Edition, which shows in the price.
1st Edition booster packs
Loose 1st Edition Fossil packs trade every day and are the most affordable 1st Edition pack from the original three sets. Raw examples run $250 to $1,000, with the middle of that range being typical for a pack with no stated weight; Aerodactyl art tends to draw the highest bids. Graded PSA or CGC packs land at $500 to $1,400, and graded examples are the safer buy because the crimp and wrap have been examined.
Unlimited booster box
Unlimited Fossil boxes have been the workhorse of the vintage box market, with sales between $6,500 and $15,000 through 2026 and an occasional stronger result near $19,000 for boxes with tight wrap and clear provenance. Unlimited packs are $100 to $250 raw and are the cheapest way to own a sealed 1999 WOTC booster. Unlimited Fossil is also the print most often found in old retail blister packaging.
Theme decks: Bodyguard and Lockdown
Fossil shipped two theme decks. Bodyguard is a Fighting and Psychic deck with a holo Hitmonlee, and Lockdown is a Water and Fire deck with a holo Muk. Sealed Unlimited decks run $130 to $300, and 1st Edition decks $350 to $800. Both decks are a reasonable way to get a sealed 1999 product with a holo inside for well under the price of a box, and they are less prone to tampering because there is no weight advantage to game.

A Fossil box gives roughly 12 holos, one every three packs on average. The three birds (Articuno 2/62, Zapdos 15/62, Moltres 12/62), Lapras 10/62, Aerodactyl 1/62, Ditto 3/62 and Kabutops 9/62 fill the next tier, and the remaining holos (Haunter, Hitmonlee, Hypno, Magneton, Muk, Raichu) are inexpensive. Fossil also has the Zapdos "non-holo rare" and other holo-rare duplicates, so a pack can pull a rare that is not a holo at all.
Is Fossil worth buying sealed?
Fossil is the value pick among the original three WOTC sets. It shares the same era, wrap style and holo density as Base Set and Jungle at a fraction of the price, and the birds, Dragonite and Gengar keep demand steady. Sealed Fossil boxes doubled or better from 2019 to 2021, dipped in 2022 and have moved higher again through 2025 and 2026. Nobody should buy Fossil to open; the expected value of an Unlimited pack is far below the pack price. If you are buying to hold, an Unlimited box or a run of graded packs is the sensible position, and the 1st Edition box is the premium version of the same bet.
How to spot fakes and resealed products
Fossil packs suffer from the same weighing issue as all WOTC boosters: packs were not weight-balanced, and the extra half gram of a holo is easy to measure. Loose Fossil packs sold without a stated weight are usually light. Beyond weighing, resealed Fossil packs are common because the pack wrap is a simple silver foil that is easy to reglue. Look at the crimps under good light: factory crimps show a regular, continuous tooth pattern across the full width; reseals show flattened, double-pressed or glued sections and sometimes a foil edge that has been trimmed.
Fake 1st Edition stamps are a real problem on Fossil holos because the price gap between Unlimited and 1st Edition Dragonite or Gengar is large. The genuine stamp is crisp, jet black and sits consistently to the left of the art box; suspect anything gray, blurred or slightly rotated, and never pay 1st Edition money for a "1st Edition" pack that is already open. For boxes, the factory wrap is thin and slightly cloudy with a single seam and vent holes, and the corners are tight. A glossy wrap, visible heat marks, a double seam or a wrap that shifts freely are signs of a rewrap. Before buying any box, ask for close photos of the seal on every side and of the seam itself, and treat a seller who will not provide them as a pass. Boxes reviewed by BBCE or graded by PSA, CGC or Beckett trade at a premium over raw boxes because the seal has been checked.
