1st Edition booster box
Neo Genesis 1st Edition boxes hold 36 packs across four arts and are stamped 1st Edition on the wrap and every card inside. They sell only a few times a year, and the reported results over the past eighteen months have ranged from around $12,000 to $35,000, with the lower numbers attached to boxes with wrap damage or thin provenance. Because so few change hands, compare several sales before committing.
1st Edition booster packs
This is the product most people actually buy. Raw 1st Edition Neo Genesis packs trade at $750 to $1,300, more than any 1st Edition pack from Jungle, Fossil or Team Rocket, and the Lugia and Feraligatr arts tend to lead. Graded packs run $900 to $1,800, and PSA 10 Lugia-art packs sit at the top. The premium over Unlimited packs is unusually large, so verify the stamp and the crimps before paying it.
Unlimited booster box
Unlimited Neo Genesis boxes trade rarely enough that comps are thin; sales have ranged from about $8,000 to $25,000, and a box with a tight factory wrap should be expected to bring the upper half of that. Unlimited packs are more common and sit at $250 to $500 raw.
Theme decks: Hot Water and Cold Fusion
Neo Genesis released two theme decks. Hot Water is a Fire and Water deck with a holo Typhlosion, and Cold Fusion is a Water and Psychic deck with a holo Feraligatr; each is 60 cards with a coin, damage counters and a rulebook. A Neo Genesis box yields roughly a dozen holos, about one every three packs, and there are 19 holos to chase. Lugia 9/111 is the flagship and the most valuable non-Charizard card of the WOTC era in top grade; raw Unlimited copies sit in the low hundreds, raw 1st Edition copies in the high hundreds to low thousands, and 1st Edition PSA 10s are five-figure cards. Typhlosion 17/111 is the second chase and comes in two versions, one with the correct "17" number and a rarer variant misnumbered "18" from the early 1st Edition print, which adds a small lottery to each 1st Edition pack. Feraligatr 5/111 (with its own two-version quirk), Meganium 10/111, Ampharos 1/111, Pichu 12/111, Slowking 14/111, Steelix 15/111 and Kingdra 8/111 make up the next tier, and the remaining holos are inexpensive. Neo Genesis rares also print in non-holo form, so the rare slot is not always a holo.
Is Neo Genesis worth buying sealed?
Neo Genesis has the strongest sealed demand of any WOTC set after Base Set and Team Rocket, thanks to Lugia and the popularity of Generation II. Sealed supply is thinner than the 1999 sets because collectors were already opening product for holos by late 2000, and the Neo series as a whole was printed in smaller numbers. Pack prices rose sharply from 2019 to 2021, softened in 2022 and have risen again through 2025 and 2026. It is a hold, not an opening product, and the single-pack market is where the liquidity is. The 1st Edition box is a serious purchase that trades a handful of times a year, so buy only with full seal photos and ideally a BBCE review or a PSA, CGC or Beckett box grade.
How to spot fakes and resealed products
Neo Genesis packs are among the most resealed vintage packs because the 1st Edition pack price is high and the pack wrap is a busy, dark design that hides crimp work. Weighing remains the first problem: Neo packs were not weight-balanced, and holo packs weigh more, so a loose pack with no stated weight from a general seller is usually light. On crimps, look for a continuous and even tooth pattern across the full edge; resealed Neo packs often show a crimp that is flattened in the middle, a second overlapping crimp line or a slight shortening of the pack. The foil should be free of fine creases near the crimp, which appear when a pack has been opened and pressed closed.
Fake 1st Edition stamps on Neo Genesis are a live issue because of the price of 1st Edition Lugia. The real stamp is solid black with sharp letter edges and sits consistently to the lower left of the art window; gray, blurred, misaligned or overly glossy stamps are fake, and a stamped card with Unlimited-print characteristics is an easy catch once you compare it side by side with a known copy. For boxes, the genuine wrap is a thin, slightly cloudy film with a single seam and small vent holes; it should hug the box and not slide. Glossy or thick wrap, a heat swirl, two seams or loose corners mean a rewrap. Ask for photos of the seal on every side plus a close-up of the seam before you pay for any Neo Genesis box, and expect a seller who refuses to be hiding something. Authenticated and graded boxes trade at a premium precisely because that inspection has already been done.
