Alpha Strike Games

Magic-first game store steps from the Texas State campus, Alpha Strike Games stays open to 9PM most nights with singles priced against the online market.

Alpha Strike Games sits at 408 S LBJ Drive, close enough to the Texas State campus that a lot of its player base walks in. The store is built around organized play more than retail browsing: Magic: The Gathering leads the room, with Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! singles and sealed rounding out the shelves, and the schedule is what most regulars are actually coming for. Commander nights come up again and again in reviews as the thing that keeps people returning.

The hours reflect that. Monday through Friday the doors open at 1PM and stay open until 9PM — a late close that most San Marcos card shops do not match. Saturday runs 12PM to 8PM and Sunday 12PM to 6PM. If your reason for visiting is play rather than shopping, the back half of a weeknight is the window; if you want counter time to work through singles, arrive shortly after the 1PM open.

On pricing, the consistent report from customers is that singles here track the online market rather than carrying a heavy storefront markup, which is unusual and is the specific reason several reviewers give for buying locally instead of shipping cards in. Staff knowledge draws similar praise, particularly for players bringing a kid or a partner into Magic for the first time — several reviews describe being taught something new on each visit rather than being sold to.

The shop holds 4.5 stars across 251 Google reviews, the largest review count of any local card shop in the city. That volume includes some genuine friction: buylist offers vary noticeably depending on who is working the counter, and at least one customer reported the online cart and pay-in-store flow failing on a large Magic order. Worth knowing if you are planning to sell into the shop or place a big singles order — call 512-749-1093 first.

As a San Marcos card shop, Alpha Strike is the play-focused option. It is where the tournament crowd lands, the hours run latest, and the singles case is deep on Magic in a way the more general local stores are not.
