Play or Draw

Avondale TCG hub for Pokemon and Magic: The Gathering singles, sealed product and Friday night tournaments, with a friendly crew that helps new players.

Play or Draw sits on East Van Buren Street and works as a gathering point for West Valley tabletop and trading card players. Reviewers keep coming back to the same words: chill, friendly, welcoming. Staff get singled out by name for patience with newcomers and kids asking questions, which makes it an easy first stop if you are just getting into the hobby.

The core of the shop is trading card games. Pokemon and Magic: The Gathering lead the way, and one reviewer called the Magic and Pokemon singles selection among the best in the state. Yu-Gi-Oh is stocked too, along with the supplies players burn through: deck boxes, binders, playmats and dice. Dungeons & Dragons books and miniatures round things out for the tabletop crowd. Collectors hunting Pokemon cards in Avondale can also dig through discount binders, which several shoppers mention as a highlight.

Community play is a big part of the draw. The store runs tournaments and regular gatherings, and the later Friday hours line up with evening events. Be aware that some reviewers feel sealed product runs pricey and that buy offers on cards are on the low side, so compare before you sell a collection here. Inventory can also be browsed through the store's online shop, and repeat online buyers praise the customer service.

Timing a visit is simple: the doors open at noon every day. Monday through Thursday and on weekends the shop closes at 6PM, while Friday stretches to 10PM. If you want a quiet browse through the singles case, aim for a weekday afternoon; if you want to see the Avondale card shop at its busiest, come Friday evening when players fill the tables.

The shop also operates a second location in Surprise, so double-check which store an event is listed for before you head out. For the Avondale storefront, call 623-500-1668 with stock or event questions.
