A Magic: The Gathering stronghold in north Sacramento with deep MTG singles, heavy play tables, Warhammer stock and doors open until 10PM every night.
Hammerhead Games began in 2017 as an online shop selling wargaming accessories, the side project of founder Tony Myers. Nearly a decade later it is a full storefront on Madison Avenue near Manzanita, on the Carmichael edge of north Sacramento, and it has become one of the places local Magic players name first when someone asks where to sleeve up a deck.
Magic: The Gathering is the center of gravity here. The singles inventory is large enough that players regularly walk in with a want list and leave with most of it checked off, and sealed product for new sets is kept in steady supply. Prereleases draw full rooms, and Commander pods fill the tables on ordinary weeknights. Players of newer games such as Sorcery: Contested Realms have found a home here too, and the shop also stocks Warhammer kits, hobby paints and Dungeons & Dragons accessories for the miniatures crowd.
The physical space is a big part of the appeal. The play area uses heavy, premium tables, and a recent layout change opened up more floor for seating. A row of pinball machines in the back gives people something to do between rounds. For anyone searching for a Sacramento card shop where they can actually sit down and play, this is a strong choice.
Selling cards works on the usual cash-or-credit model, and taking store credit gets you a better rate if you plan to spend it on singles anyway. Hammerhead keeps an online event calendar, so check it before you go for draft nights, Commander meetups and release events.
The staff will total up a stack of cards on the spot rather than asking you to leave them, which makes a quick trade on the way to a game easy. If you're new to organized play, a prerelease is a good first event, since everyone starts with unopened packs and nobody brings an optimized deck. Hammerhead is open 11AM to 10PM seven days a week, which is unusually late for the area and handy after work. The store is in suites V and W of the Madison Avenue shopping strip.
