Daydreams Comics

Daydreams Comics is Iowa City's beloved comic book and trading card shop, nestled in the heart of downtown near the University of Iowa. A true community institution, this long-running shop carries comic books, graphic novels, manga, trading cards, and collectibles in a warm, welcoming environment that has served Hawkeye fans and collectors for decades.

In the vibrant college town of Iowa City, Daydreams Comics has stood as a cultural cornerstone for lovers of comics, trading cards, and pop culture collectibles. Located at 229 E. Washington Street in the heart of downtown Iowa City — just steps from the University of Iowa campus and the pedestrian mall — the shop occupies a prime location that has welcomed generations of students, faculty, and lifelong collectors.

Comic books are the heart and soul of Daydreams, with an impressive catalog spanning new release Wednesdays, deep back issue bins, graphic novels, trade paperbacks, and manga. Collectors and casual readers alike can lose themselves in the carefully curated selection, which covers everything from Marvel and DC superhero titles to independent publishers and Japanese imports.

Trading cards play a meaningful role in the shop's identity as well. The shop carries sports cards, Pokémon, and other trading card games, making Daydreams a convenient single stop for collectors who love both comics and cards. The knowledgeable staff can speak to both mediums with equal authority, bridging the gap between the two hobbies that so often overlap in their enthusiast base.

The shop's downtown Iowa City location gives it a character and charm that big-box stores simply cannot replicate. Brick walls, packed display cases, and decades of accumulated history create an atmosphere that feels more like discovering a hidden treasure trove than visiting a conventional retail shop. Regular customers know that unexpected finds — a vintage comic, a key issue in high grade, a rare card — are always possible.

As a CGC-listed authorized dealer, Daydreams Comics participates in the professional grading ecosystem for comic books, giving collectors a trusted local resource for preservation and authentication services. The shop has earned recognition from the broader collector community for its depth and reliability.

Operating hours — Monday and Tuesday noon to 4 PM, Wednesday 10 AM to 6 PM, Thursday through Friday 11 AM to 6 PM — cater to the rhythm of a college town, with midweek new release days taking priority. For Iowa City collectors and University of Iowa students, Daydreams Comics is an essential stop that has earned its place as a beloved local institution.
