Hobby Box
One pack of five cards, twelve boxes to a case, sold direct through Panini's online store rather than distributors. The specific breakdown shifted by season. The 2019-20 box averaged one autographed memorabilia card numbered to 49 or less, two base or base rookie parallels numbered to 65 or less, and two base cards numbered to 149 or less. The 2021-22 box kept the same shape against a 95-card base set where every card was numbered to 149 or lower. The 2023-24 box, released in October 2024, simplified to one autograph plus two base parallels.
FOTL (First Off The Line)
FOTL boxes released ahead of the standard hobby run and are the more interesting version. The 2023-24 FOTL guaranteed a FOTL autograph numbered to 21 or less, a FOTL parallel numbered to 15 or less, and one additional parallel, with Ruby FOTL numbered to 15 and Emerald FOTL to 3 exclusive to that configuration. FOTL supply was small and sealed boxes are hard to find, so pricing is set by the few listings that exist.
Hobby Case
Twelve boxes. Case buying was the practical way to chase the super short prints, since a single five-card box gives you almost no shots at them. Sealed cases surface occasionally from the later seasons.
What is not Panini Black
Prizm Black is a separate product with its own configuration and checklist, built on the Prizm chassis. Panini also produced Black Gold basketball in earlier seasons. If your box says Prizm on it, you want the Panini Prizm page, not this one.

The 2020-21 and 2019-20 boxes carry the strongest rookie classes and price accordingly, both sitting in the $400-$575 area. The 2023-24 box is the volatile one: the Wembanyama name pushes asks toward $725 while shops that still hold release stock list closer to $290, and both prices have been live in the same month. If you want that season, patience pays.
The middle seasons, 2021-22 and 2022-23, are the cheapest entry into the product and sit in a tight $300-$400 band. That is roughly what a five-card box with one guaranteed autograph is worth on the math, which tells you the market is pricing these sensibly rather than speculatively.
Chase cards, parallels and hit rates
Because the base set is numbered top to bottom, the parallel ladder is the product. It runs Silver numbered to 75, Copper to 35, Gold to 25, Amethyst to 15, Quartz to 8, Holo Gold to 5 and Platinum as a 1/1, with the 2023-24 edition adding a Shine short print plus the FOTL-only Ruby to 15 and Emerald to 3.
Inserts are deliberately scarce. White Night is the recurring super short print, and the 2023-24 edition introduced Vanta as a second SSP making its NBA debut. Autographs come through Rookie Memorabilia Autographs, Rookie Jumbo Memorabilia Autographs, Smoke Show Signatures and, from 2023-24, Dead of Night Signatures. With one autograph per box and no numbered floor beyond the parallels, the outcome of a Panini Black box is close to binary: either the autograph is someone or it is not.
Is Panini Black worth buying sealed?
Panini Black is priced honestly, which is unusual. A $350 box with one autograph and four numbered cards is roughly fair, and there is no large gap between price and expected value in the middle seasons. That also means there is not much upside baked in.
The case for holding sealed rests on two things. First, the entire run is licensed and closed, since Panini's NBA license ended after 2024-25 and no 2024-25 or later Panini Black basketball was produced. Second, distribution was online-only and print runs were small by Panini standards, so sealed supply is genuinely limited rather than just aged. The case against is that a five-card box has no break-group appeal and limited liquidity. If you are buying, 2019-20 and 2020-21 are the seasons with rookie classes that will still matter in ten years.
How to spot fakes and resealed boxes
A one-pack box holding a guaranteed autograph is the highest-risk format there is for resealing, and Panini Black is exactly that. Panini's factory wrap on these is tight and thin with folded ends; be suspicious of anything heavily shrunk, glossy or slightly loose at the corners. Check the flap for adhesive residue and look at the box edges in raking light for tool marks.
Format verification matters as much as seal verification here. FOTL boxes carry FOTL branding printed on the box, so ask for a photo of the box art rather than trusting the title, since FOTL commands a substantial premium. Confirm the season on the box too, because the designs are similar across years by intent. Weighing is useless with five cards of identical stock. Because these were sold direct by Panini, boxes still in their original Panini shipping carton are a good provenance signal.
Where to buy Panini Black sealed
Since the product never went through normal distribution, shop stock is uncommon but not impossible, and shops that bought through group breaks sometimes hold boxes; the card shop directory is worth checking.
