The Hive Comics

Shuttered in 2023 and reopened on Grandview in 2025, The Hive pairs Pokemon and Magic singles with sports cards, comics and a Friday night that runs to 10.

The Hive's story is the reason to know about it. Owner James Laws bought the shop in 2019, closed it in 2023 when the economics stopped working, and then reopened at 2103 N Grandview Avenue with a grand opening on September 1, 2025. Local outlets covered the reopening as a revival of Odessa's gaming scene, which is a fair description of what a town this size loses when its hybrid comic-and-card shop goes dark.

The current inventory splits between two audiences that rarely share a storefront in West Texas. On the card side: Pokemon, Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece, Riftbound, and a genuine sports card section — one Yelp reviewer's summary is simply that they have comics, Magic and Pokemon, and sports cards too. On the other side: single issues, graphic novels, manga, D&D and tabletop, plus card and comic supplies. Pull-box subscriptions are available for anyone who wants their weekly comics held.

In-store play is the stated direction of travel. Laws has publicly outlined plans for competitive Magic, competitive Pokemon and competitive Yu-Gi-Oh! nights, and the hours are built around it: the shop opens at noon six days a week and pushes to 10PM on Fridays. That Friday extension is the natural evening-play slot, and it is the one day worth choosing if you want the room busy rather than quiet.

Practical details before you go. The shop is closed Sundays — a genuine trap, because several older directory listings still carry the previous 3615 N Dixie Boulevard address along with stale hours. Grandview is the current and correct location. Ordering runs through a Square storefront at thehivecomics.square.site, and the shop is active on Instagram and Facebook as @thehivecomicshop, where restocks and event nights get announced first.
