How Pokémon's Release Cadence Works
Understanding the release rhythm helps you plan purchases and pre-orders:
4 main expansions per year. Released roughly quarterly, with one large set per quarter.
2–3 special expansions or sub-sets. Smaller releases that bridge main sets, often themed or focused on specific Pokémon families.
Monthly premium collections. Standalone products with promo cards, accessories, and packs.
Seasonal tie-ins. Holiday boxes (October–November), spring promotional products, summer collections.
Annual ETBs. Each main expansion has Elite Trainer Box releases timed to street date.
Pre-Order Windows
Most main expansions open pre-orders 4–8 weeks before release date. Pre-order channels:
Local card shops. Best for collectors who want guaranteed allocation. Most shops accept pre-orders for boxes and ETBs.
Pokémon Center online. Pre-orders for Pokémon Center exclusives. Limited per-customer caps.
Online distributors (Troll & Toad, Dave & Adam's, etc.). Bulk pre-orders sometimes at slight discount.
Big box retailers. Generally don't accept pre-orders. Day-of-release availability only.
Release-Day Strategy
For collectors who want hot product on release day:
Pre-order at local shop. Cleanest path. MSRP, allocated, no scalper fight.
Pokémon Center online at drop time. If you want exclusives.
Big box first hour of opening. Hot product clears in minutes; if you want a chance, arrive early.
Wait for restocks. If you miss release day, restocks typically arrive 30–90 days later. Premium softens.
