Pokémon TCG Mega Evolution Block: Every Set Explained
A complete guide to the Pokémon TCG Mega Evolution block — every set from Mega Evolution to Pitch Black, the new mechanic, and chase cards.
The Mega Evolution block is the centerpiece of Pokémon TCG content from late 2025 through 2026 and into 2027. The block introduces Mega Evolution Pokémon ex as a powerful new mechanic and spans six expansions plus special sets. This guide covers every set in the block — what's released, what's coming, the chase cards in each, and how the block reshapes Standard format play.
The Mega Evolution Block at a Glance
Six confirmed expansions in the block as of May 2026, with more expected through 2027:
Mega Evolution (ME01). Block opener. Established the Mega Evolution ex mechanic.
Phantasmal Flames (ME02). Second expansion. Expanded the cardpool.
Ascended Heroes (ME2.5). Mid-block special set.
Perfect Order (ME03). March 2026 release.
Chaos Rising (ME04). May 22, 2026 release.
Pitch Black. July 17, 2026 release.
Plus premium collections, ETBs, and collection boxes that bridge sets.
Mega Evolution ex: The New Mechanic
Mega Evolution Pokémon ex are the block's signature mechanic. Key rules:
Mega Evolution ex Pokémon stay in the Active Spot when knocked out. They give up two Prize cards on knockout, like other ex Pokémon, but with stronger attacks and abilities to balance the high HP and prize trade.
Built around iconic Mega Evolution Pokémon. The same Pokémon that received Mega Evolution treatment in the main video game series get TCG Mega ex versions. Mega Charizard, Mega Mewtwo, Mega Lucario, Mega Greninja, and others.
Strong supporting Trainers and Items. Each Mega Evolution set includes Trainers that specifically support the mechanic.
Set 1: Mega Evolution (ME01)
The block's launch expansion. Established the format with several Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, including chase cards that became immediately competitive. The set's chase cards continue to hold value through the end of the block as they remain Standard-legal.
Set 2: Phantasmal Flames (ME02)
Second expansion. Expanded the Mega Evolution cardpool with additional Pokémon and Trainer support. Set artwork emphasized darker / phantom-themed Mega Evolutions.
Set 2.5: Ascended Heroes
Mid-block special set. Fewer cards than a main expansion but with high-value chase content. Premium collections and special-edition products provided alternate ways to acquire the set's chase cards.
Set 3: Perfect Order (ME03)
March 2026 release. Focused on order and structure-themed Mega Evolutions. Continued building competitive Standard archetypes.
Set 4: Chaos Rising (ME04)
Release date: May 22, 2026
Key new content: Mega Greninja and Mega Floette debuts.
Pre-release: Build & Battle Decks for ME04 launched the prerelease wave several weeks before street date. See our Chaos Rising prerelease coverage.
Chaos Rising introduces what many competitive players consider the strongest Mega Evolution Pokémon to date. Mega Greninja's Mortal Shuriken ability has become a focal point of post-rotation deck-building.

What's Next After Pitch Black?
The Pokémon Company has not officially confirmed sets beyond Pitch Black, but the cadence of recent blocks suggests:
Late 2026: A holiday-tied special set or premium collection.
Early 2027: The next mechanic block begins, likely with a January or February launch.
2027 Standard rotation: Mega Evolution block content remains Standard-legal through at least the 2027-28 season.
Investing in Mega Evolution Block Cards
The block's longevity matters for collectors. Mega Evolution content stays Standard-legal for at least one more rotation cycle (through April 2027 minimum), giving cards extended competitive demand. Investment categories:
Alt arts of meta-relevant Mega Pokémon. Mega Charizard, Mega Greninja, Mega Mewtwo alt arts.
Sealed boxes from key sets. Phantasmal Flames and Pitch Black sealed boxes are likely to appreciate based on chase card demand.
Premium collections. Mega Greninja Premium Collection has the right characteristics — limited print, strong character, hot timing — to appreciate.

Building a Block Master Set
Master set collectors aim for one copy of every card in every Mega Evolution block expansion. Practical considerations:
Each main expansion: Roughly 200 cards in the base set plus 50–100 secret rares and ultra rares.
Pulling from packs vs. buying singles: Pulling rate makes complete sets nearly impossible from packs alone. Most master set builders supplement with TCGplayer single purchases for missing pieces.
Cost expectation: A complete Mega Evolution block master set across all expansions runs $1,500–$5,000+ depending on chase card pricing and which alt arts you target.
