Mega Evolution Chaos Rising Prerelease Window Begins May 9: Inside the Build and Battle Box

Pokemon TCG players can crack open Mega Evolution Chaos Rising two weeks before the May 22 wide release. Here is what is in the Build and Battle Box, the foil promo lineup, and the chase Mega ex cards to watch during the May 9 to 17 Prerelease window.

Pokemon TCG players don't have to wait until May 22 to crack into the next mainline expansion. Mega Evolution Chaos Rising hits Prerelease at participating local game stores from May 9 through May 17, 2026, and the Build & Battle Box that powers those events is the first chance the public gets to pull cards from the set, two full weeks ahead of the official street date.

Chaos Rising is the second mainline set in the Mega Evolution era and the follow-up to the Mega Evolution debut block earlier this year. The Build & Battle Box is the engine behind every Pokemon Prerelease, and after a year that has remixed the format around the gold-frame Mega ex archetype, the contents this time around are worth a closer look.

What's in the Build & Battle Box

Each Build & Battle Box for Chaos Rising includes:

  • A 40-card prebuilt deck ready to play right out of the box in Prerelease format
  • One of four unique foil promo cards, randomly inserted, that double as the Prerelease evergreen pulls
  • Four Mega Evolution Chaos Rising booster packs to enhance the deck before sitting down for matches

The standard Prerelease tournament structure expects players to crack the four bonus packs, then add cards to the prebuilt deck to reach a legal 40-card list. It is the most accessible TCG event format Pokemon runs and a great on-ramp for collectors who like to play but don't want to navigate Standard rotation.

The chase cards driving early demand

Chaos Rising is a 120+ card expansion, with 20+ Trainers and more than 35 illustration-rare cards. The Mega Evolution ex headliners include Mega Greninja ex, Mega Pyroar ex, Mega Floette ex, and Mega Dragalge ex. Mega Greninja ex is the consensus chase, and Build & Battle Box openings will be the first secondary-market data point the hobby has on Chaos Rising pull rates and pricing before the May 22 wide release.

If past Mega Evolution sets are any guide, expect Build & Battle Box prices to climb from MSRP into the $35 to $45 range in the days after Prerelease as the foil promo and chase rare prints settle.

How Prerelease tickets typically work

Most game stores cap Prerelease seating and require an entry fee that covers the Build & Battle Box plus event play. Because Chaos Rising's Prerelease window stretches across two weekends, many shops are running multiple flights, including a Saturday-Sunday lineup on May 9-10 and again on May 16-17. If your local hobby store isn't visible in our directory yet, our community-driven shop listings often surface stores you didn't know carried Pokemon product, and that's where to look first if your usual spot is full.

What this means for the wider release on May 22

Build & Battle Box openings are the first leak of real data into the secondary market. By May 17 we'll have a strong read on which Mega Evolution ex is pulling the most weight, which illustration rares are surprise hits, and how the early sealed market is pricing booster boxes ahead of the May 22 launch of Elite Trainer Boxes, Booster Bundles, and the Mega Lucario ex League Battle Deck. For collectors deciding whether to chase singles or hold for sealed product, the Prerelease weekend is the data drop to watch.
